American Judicature Society
The American Judicature Society (AJS) is an independent, non-partisan membership organization working nationally to protect the integrity of the American justice system. AJS's membership — including judges, lawyers, and members of the public — promotes fair and impartial courts through research, publications, education, and advocacy for judicial reform. The work of AJS focuses primarily on judicial diversity, judicial ethics, judicial selection, access to justice, criminal justice reform, and the jury system. History The American Judicature Society was established in 1913 as an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with the purpose of improving the administration of justice in the United States, and to increase public understanding of the justice system. David Ivar Swanson
David Ivar Swanson (September 14, 1884 – April 8, 1950) was an Illinois state representative (Republican Party). He served as Representative from the 53rd through the 66th General Assemblies, except for the 60th and 64th legislative sessions. He was Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary for the 54th–57th, 62nd–63rd and 65th Assemblies. During the 1945 session Swanson was Legal Adviser to the Speaker of the House in Springfield, and during 65th session was Republican House caucus chairman, and member of the Policy Committee. Warren Austin
Warren Robinson Austin (November 12, 1877 – December 25, 1962) was an American politician and diplomat who served as United States Senator from Vermont and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. A native of Highgate Center, Vermont, Austin was educated in Highgate and Bakersfield, and also studied in Quebec to learn French. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1899, studied law with his father, was admitted to the bar in 1902, and practiced in partnership with his father. Austin settled in St. Albans, became active in politics as a Republican, and served in several local offices, including Grand Juror, Chairman of the city Republican committee, and State's Attorney of Franklin County (1904-1906). William French Smith
William French Smith II (August 26, 1917 – October 29, 1990) was an American lawyer and the 74th United States Attorney General. After attaining his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1942, Smith went on to join the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in 1946. Smith became acquainted with California governor candidate Ronald Reagan in 1966, after which Reagan appointed him to the University of California Board of Regents. Smith was nominated for U.S. Attorney General shortly after Reagan's victory in the 1980 United States presidential election, assuming the title on January 23, 1981, and serving until February 25, 1985. Glenn Parker (November 25, 1898 – April 18, 1989) was an American jurist who served as a justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court from December 5, 1955, to January 6, 1975. Career Parker was born in Murray, Iowa, to Charles Theron Parker (1851–1932) and Mary Lavanchie Ball (1873–1958). He grew up with his family on a farm near Sheridan, Wyoming. Parker attended the University of Wyoming where, in 1922, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1924, a law degree. Between the time he received his bachelor's degree and his return to law school, he taught school in Laramie and Casper. Parker served in the U.S. Army in World Wars I and II and rose to the rank of colonel. Parker was admitted to the Wyoming State Bar in 1927 and practiced law in Laramie. Henry Monsky (February 4, 1890 – May 2, 1947) was a Jewish-American lawyer and communal leader from Omaha, Nebraska. Life Monsky was born on February 4, 1890 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of fish dealer Abraham Monsky and Betsy Perisnev Greenblatt. His parents were Orthodox Jews who immigrated to America from Lithuania in the 1880s. His father was a cantor, and as a boy he went to ''cheder'' in addition to public schools. Monsky graduated from high school in 1907. He then studied law at Creighton University School of Law, graduating from there cum laude with a LL.B. degree in 1912. He began practicing law in Omaha afterwards. By 1926, he was senior member of the law firm Monsky, Katleman & Grodinsky. William Ramsey Clark (December 18, 1927 – April 9, 2021) was an American lawyer, activist, and federal government official. A progressive, New Frontier liberal, he occupied senior positions in the United States Department of Justice under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, serving as United States Attorney General from 1967 to 1969; previously, he was Deputy Attorney General from 1965 to 1967 and Assistant Attorney General from 1961 to 1965.
