American Distilling Institute
The American Distilling Institute (ADI), is the major trade association for the craft / micro distillery industry in the United States representing over 2000 licensed craft distilleries operating in the United States. History The American Distilling Institute was the United States' first association for the craft distillery industry since prohibition. It was founded in 2003 when there were only ~60 distilleries as state regulations in the United States eased and began to allow small distilleries to operate again. Prior to prohibition there were over 2000 local distilleries. However, after prohibition was lifted, careful management of government regulation ( the three tier system) by the largest distilleries and wholesalers to minimize competition blocked most distilleries from reopening. Bill Owens (born September 25, 1938) is an American photographer, photojournalist, brewer and editor living in Hayward, California. He is best known for his photographs of suburban domestic scenes taken in the East Bay and published in the book ''Suburbia'' (1973). Owens is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and two National Endowment for the Arts Grants. According to ''The New York Sun,'' "Owens is uniquely associated with suburbanites living in the tract housing developments that absorbed 60 million Americans in the decades following World War II." Microdistillery
A microdistillery is a small, often boutique-style distillery established to produce beverage grade spirit alcohol in relatively small quantities, usually done in single batches (as opposed to larger distillers' continuous distilling process). While the term is most commonly used in the United States, micro-distilleries have been established in Europe for many years, either as small cognac distilleries supplying the larger cognac houses, or as distilleries of single malt whisky originally produced for the blended Scotch whisky market, but whose products are now sold as niche single malt brands. Germain-Robin, based in Ukiah, California, is a maker of brandy. History The distillery was founded in 1982 by Ansley J. Coale Jr., a local rancher, and Hubert Germain-Robin, a native of Cognac, France. Coale, a former Berkeley professor of ancient history and son of Princeton demographer Ansley Coale, Sr., had bought of farmland outside of Ukiah named Eagle Ridge Ranch in 1973. By chance, one day in 1981 he picked up Germain-Robin, who was hitchhiking throughout California in search of a location to make brandy. Germain-Robin came from a family that had been making cognac under the name Jules Robin & Company but had recently sold the business to Martell, prompting Germain-Robin to leave. Lost Spirits is a working distillery and immersive circus show located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was founded by Bryan Davis and Joanne Haruta. The distillery was initially located in Salinas, California, where it opened in 2010. In 2016, the distillery was moved to downtown Los Angeles, California and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. The experience of visiting Lost Spirits has been described as "cult hit among spirits geeks". The distillery attracted attention after Davis developed technology to create mature whisky and rum within days. Bryan Davis (inventor)
Bryan Davis (born 1981 in Monterey, California) is an American inventor and distiller. He is most noteworthy for inventing and patenting the first process documented to successfully replicate some of the effects of barrel ageing of distilled spirits in a laboratory (the Davis method). He is the founder of Lost Spirits an award-winning distilled spirits manufacturing company which uses the technology to manufacture its products as well as license the technology to third parties. Kings County Distillery is a distillery located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York City. It produces corn whiskey, bourbon whiskey, and rye whiskey, as well as other American craft whiskeys.
