American Alliance For Medical Cannabis
The American Alliance for Medical Cannabis (AAMC) is an organization that promotes the legal access to medical cannabis, with the help of health professionals, members of the community, educators, patients, clergy and caregivers. The National Director from 2001 to 2005 was Dr. Jay Cavanaugh. Medical Cannabis
Medical cannabis, or medical marijuana (MMJ), is cannabis and cannabinoids that are prescribed by physicians for their patients. The use of cannabis as medicine has not been rigorously tested due to production and governmental restrictions, resulting in limited clinical research to define the safety and efficacy of using cannabis to treat diseases. Preliminary evidence has indicated that cannabis might reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy and reduce chronic pain and muscle spasms. Regarding non-inhaled cannabis or cannabinoids, a 2021 review found that it provided little relief against chronic pain and sleep disturbance, and caused several transient adverse effects, such as cognitive impairment, nausea, and drowsiness. Jay Cavanaugh
Dr. Jay Cavanaugh (1949–2005) was a prominent supporter of medical marijuana. He was appointed to thCalifornia State Board of Pharmacyfor ten years by three Governors. He also worked in drug abuse recovery. In 2001 he became National Director of the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis. Biography From 1970-73 he worked at thLos Angeles County Health Departmentas an outpatient drug treatment caseworker. From 1973-89 he was the Interagency Drug Abuse Recovery Programs first paid executive director. The program was created by community organizers supported by Los Angeles County and run by volunteers until it was professionalized by the hiring of Jay and other staff.
