Amber Mae Cecil
Amber Mae Cecil (20 August 1938 – 15 July 1998) was a prominent Australian radio, theatre and television actress of the 1950s and 1960s. Early life Amber Mae Cecil was born on 20 August 1938 in Potts Point. Her parents were also prominent figures of Australian radio, Rosalind Margaret Kennerdale (1910–1994), an actor, and Lawrence Henry Cecil (1888–1968), a producer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Her grandfather, Norman Kennerdale (1880–1950), ran a school of dramatic arts, later managed by Rosalind Kennerdale. Career Cecil was 12 years old when she made her debut in Grace Gibson's radio serial ''Night Beat.'' She was offered a stage role by Queenie Ashton and played roles for the Metropolitan, Independent and Mercury Theatre companies. ''The Multi-Coloured Umbrella'' is an Australian play written by Barbara Vernon. Plot The play is set at a house in Bondi Beach belonging to the Donnellys, an upwardly mobile family who are bookmakers at Randwick Racecourse. The younger son, Joe, has troubles with his bride, Kate, a woman from a "good" family. Joe's brother Ben is in love with Kate. This leads to a fight between Joe and Ben. Background Vernon said she was inspired to write it when working as a radio announcer for 2NZ Inverell. She would read out ads for the local bookie which would say "do your punting under the multi-coloured umbrella". She thought about umbrellas and how they protected you from the light - just as some people can't see the light (their own motives) and have trouble clarifying their thought and action. Monica Elizabeth Jolley AO (4 June 1923 – 13 February 2007) was an English-born Australian writer who settled in Western Australia in the late 1950s and forged an illustrious literary career there. She was 53 when her first book was published, and she went on to publish fifteen novels (including an autobiographical trilogy), four short story collections and three non-fiction books, publishing well into her 70s and achieving significant critical acclaim. The Mercury Theatre was an independent repertory theatre company founded in New York City in 1937 by Orson Welles and producer John Houseman. The company produced theatrical presentations, radio programs and motion pictures. The Mercury also released promptbooks and phonographic recordings of four Shakespeare works for use in schools. After a series of acclaimed Broadway productions, the Mercury Theatre progressed into its most popular incarnation as ''The Mercury Theatre on the Air''. The radio series included one of the most notable and infamous radio broadcasts of all time, "The War of the Worlds", broadcast October 30, 1938. Potts Point is a small and densely populated suburb in inner-city Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Ethel Muriel Ashton (11 November 190321 October 1999), known professionally as Queenie Ashton, was a character actress, born in England, who had a long career in Australia as a theatre performer and radio personality, best known for her radio and television soap opera roles, although she did also feature briefly in films.
