Amasia, Shirak
Amasia ( hy, Ամասիա), previously known as ''Hamasia'', is a village and rural community (municipality) in the Shirak Province of Armenia. It is located on the right bank of the Akhuryan River. The Statistical Committee of Armenia reported its population was 2,218 in 2010, up from 1,878 at the time of the 2001 census. Etymology Amasia's name is traditionally considered to be derived from Amasia Haykazuni, a great-grandson of Hayk, the legendary progenitor of the Armenians. History Historically, the area that Amasia is located in was a part of the canton of Ashotsk of the province of Gugark of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. Voghji ( hy, Ողջի) is a village in the Amasia Municipality of the Shirak Province of Armenia. Gtashen
Gtashen ( hy, Գտաշեն) is a village in the Amasia Municipality of the Shirak Province of Armenia. History Armenians and Azeris once lived in the village, as well as Greeks, who even had a church, of which a half-ruined wall remains in the center of the village. In 1988-1989 Armenians from Akhalkalaki, Gyumri, Talin, Amasia and Nagorno-Karabakh settled in the village. Aregnadem
Aregnadem ( hy, Արեգնադեմ) is a village in the Amasia Municipality of the Shirak Province of Armenia. History Aregnadem village was founded at end of 17th century and was called Gharachanta (Latinized Armenian spelling of ''Karaçanta'', meaning ''black bag'' in Turkish). It was part of Aghbaba uchastok of Kars Okrug in Kars Oblast between 1878 and 1918. It was passed to Soviet Armenia according to treaties of Moscow and Kars in 1921. It was renamed as ''Azizbekov'' in honour of Mashadi Azizbeyov, one of the 26 Baku Commissars on 4 May 1939. Prior to 1988, the village was populated by Azerbaijanis, whereby "there was not a single Armenain family". May Uprising
The May Uprising ( hy, Մայիսյան ապստամբություն, translit=Mayisyan apstambutyun) was a coup d'état attempt by the Armenian Bolsheviks that started in Alexandropol (modern-day Gyumri) on May 10, 1920. It was eventually suppressed by the Armenian government on May 14 and its leaders executed. Although the revolt failed, Armenia was Sovietized after the 11th Army of Soviet Russia invaded the country in November 1920 and the Turkish Nationalists occupied the western half of the country.
