, which means "Heaven's Grass," is a series of islands off the west coast of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan. Amakusa Airfield
is an airport located northwest of Amakusa, Kumamoto, Japan, on the Amakusa, Amakusa Islands . Locals often refer to the airfield as Amakusa Airport. It is located on the northern side of the Amakusa Islands, north west of Amakusa city. Only one airline, Amakusa Airlines, uses this airfield, in which lthe airline is headquartered. History On September 6, 1982, the governor of Kumamoto Prefecture announced plans for a small airport during a regular press conference. On December 26, 1990, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (Japan), Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the construction of the airfield. Shimoshima Island, Amakusa
is the largest island in the Amakusa archipelago. Its coasts are washed by Ariake Sea, Amakusa-nada sea, East China Sea and Yatsushiro Sea. Most of ''Shimoshima Island'' is administered as part of Amakusa city, with 67 km2 patch on north-west coast belonging to Reihoku town. The island's highest peak is Mount Tenjiku . Shimabara Rebellion
The , also known as the or , was an uprising that occurred in the Shimabara Domain of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan from 17 December 1637 to 15 April 1638. Matsukura Katsuie, the ''daimyō'' of the Shimabara Domain, enforced unpopular policies set by his father Matsukura Shigemasa that drastically raised taxes to construct the new Shimabara Castle and violently prohibited Christianity. In December 1637, an alliance of local ''rōnin'' and mostly Catholic peasants led by Amakusa Shirō rebelled against the Tokugawa shogunate due to discontent over Katsuie's policies. Yatsushiro Sea
The , which is also called the , is a shallow semi-enclosed inland sea separating the island of Kyūshū from the Amakusa Islands. It lies mostly within Kumamoto Prefecture and at the southern end of the sea it also borders Kagoshima Prefecture. To the north is the Ariake Sea; to the south, the East China Sea. Cities of note that lie on the Yatsushiro Sea include Yatsushiro itself and Minamata. Mercury pollution The sea was heavily polluted with mercury during the 1950s and 1960s from the Chisso Corporation's chemical factory in Minamata.Yoshida 2006. This highly toxic chemical bioaccumulated in shellfish and fish in the Yatsushiro Sea which, when eaten by the local populace, gave rise to Minamata disease.
