Alversund is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1885 until 1964. It was located in the southwestern part of the mainland portion of the present-day Alver Municipality in Vestland county. It originally included area on the island of Holsnøy as well, but that was later separated. Alversund covered upon its dissolution in 1964. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Alversund, where Alversund Church is located. Name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Alver farm ( non, Alviðra) since the first Alversund Church was built there. The meaning of the farm name is "all weather" (meaning "weather from all directions" - describing a farm with an exposed and unsheltered site). Alversund Church
Alversund Church ( no, Alversund kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Alversund. It is one of the four churches for the Knarvik parish which is part of the Nordhordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1879 using plans drawn up by the architect Jon Jonsen Alvær. The church seats about 200 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1329, but it was not new that year. The priest, Righardt, from this church was mentioned in records from 1127. The Alversund Bridge ( no, Alversund bru) is a suspension bridge spanning the Alverstraumen, a narrow strait between the island of Radøy and the mainland in the village of Alversund in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. Nils Hjelmtveit
Nils Hjelmtveit (21 July 1892–30 October 1985) was a Norwegian educator and politician for the Labour Party. He was mayor of Stokken, MP from 1925 to 1930, Minister of Education and Church Affairs from 1935 to 1945 and County Governor of Aust-Agder from 1945 to 1961. Early career He was born at Hopland in Alversund municipality as a son of farmer Nils Hjelmtveit, Sr. (1861–1911) and his wife Ingebjørg Herland (1865–1893). He graduated from Stord Teacher's College in 1913, and was hired as a teacher in Eydehamn in the same year. He was promoted to headmaster in 1918. In December 1918, he married Karen Adelma Andersen (1894–1991). National politics From 1919 to 1920 he also published the temperance weekly magazine ''Egden''. Radøy is an island in Vestland county, Norway. It is located east of Fedjefjorden in Alver Municipality. The island has an area of . The highest point of the island is the tall ''Morkefjellet''.
