Alta Group Newspapers Inc. was a newspaper publisher in the northeastern United States, overseeing three daily newspapers and one weekly newspaper before being bought and broken up by Community Newspaper Company in 1996. The company's flagship property was the '' Journal Tribune'' in Biddeford, Maine. Its most profitable newspaper was ''The Milford Daily News'' in Massachusetts. It also ran ''The Evening Times'' of Little Falls, New York, and the weekly '' The Northern Light'' in Conway, New Hampshire. History Managed as a trust by Bank of Boston, Alta was formed in 1977 to oversee four newspapers and five charities owned by the Foster and Whitehouse families. Community Newspaper Company
Community Newspaper Company, or CNC, was the largest publisher of weekly newspapers in eastern Massachusetts in the 1990s and first decade of the 21st century. It also published several daily newspapers in Greater Boston. The company's properties were assembled by Fidelity Investments in the 1980s; Fidelity founded the company and then sold it to the ''Boston Herald'' in 2001. Five years later, the chain was purchased by, and immediately became the largest single component of, GateHouse Media. GateHouse gradually phased out CNC branding in favor of "WickedLocal.com", the company's website, and GateHouse Media New England; this process was complete by 2011, when staff email addresses dropped the "@cnc.com" domain. Holdings CNC's flagship publication was ''The MetroWest Daily News'', based in Framingham, Massachusetts. In 2011 it also published ''The Milford Daily News''. York County is the southwesternmost county in the U.S. state of Maine, along the state of New Hampshire's eastern border. Conway is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. It is the most populous community in the county, with a population of 9,822 at the 2020 census, down from 10,115 at the 2010 census. Little Falls is a city in Herkimer County, New York. The population was 4,946 at the time of the 2010 census, which is the second-smallest city population in the state, ahead of only the city of Sherrill. The city is built on both sides of the Mohawk River, at a point at which rapids had impeded travel upriver. Transportation through the valley was improved by construction of the Erie Canal, completed in 1825 and connecting the Great Lakes with the Hudson River. The city is located at the northeastern corner of the town of Little Falls and is east of Utica.
