Alsophila Humilis
''Alsophila humilis'', synonym ''Cyathea humilis'', is a species of tree fern native to Kenya, as well as the Usambara and Uluguru Mountains in Tanzania, where it grows in wet forest at an altitude of 1100–2000 m. The trunk of this plant is erect and 2–3 m tall. Fronds are pinnate and 1–2 m in length. Dead fronds are often retained in the typical variety (''A. h.'' var. ''humilis''), forming an irregular skirt around the trunk. The rachis and stipe are light brown in colouration. Scales are present towards the base of the stipe. They are dark, glossy, and have narrow, fragile edges. Sori occur at the forks of veins and are protected by thin, reduced indusia. Two distinct varieties of ''A. humilis'' are known. ''A. h.'' var. ''pycnophylla'', the lesser known form, is endemic to the Mogodoro district of Tanzania. This variety differs in the shape of its fronds and does not retain them as a skirt around its trunk. Georg Hans Emmo Wolfgang Hieronymus
Georg Hans Emmo Wolfgang Hieronymus (1846–1921) was a European botanist of German extraction. He was born in Silesia and died in Berlin. He began his career as a medical student in Zürich and Bern from 1868 to 1870, but became interested in botany, instead. He then studied at the University of Halle, where he earned his doctorate in 1872. Hieronymus was professor of botany in Córdoba, Argentina, from 1874 to 1883. While in South America, he investigated flora native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Uruguay. He also lived in Breslau, 1883–1892, and Berlin, where he was curator of the botanic garden and botanic garden museum starting in 1892. He edited the botanical journal '' Hedwigia'' for 28 years. Hieronymus' specialty was in ferns and algae. He was known for his plant collections in both central Europe and in much of South America. A sorus (pl. sori) is a cluster of sporangia (structures producing and containing spores) in ferns and fungi. A coenosorus (plural coenosori) is a compound sorus composed of multiple, fused sori. ''Alsophila'' is a genus of tree ferns in the family Cyatheaceae. It has also been considered to be a section in the subgenus ''Cyathea'' of the genus ''Cyathea''. Description Species of ''Alsophila'' have a treelike growth habit, with an erect trunk that rarely branches, or sometimes a more shrublike habit, with a creeping stem. Their fronds are large, with a strawlike stalk (stipe), dark brown or black in colour. Brown or dark brown scales are present, with distinct margins. ''Cyathea'' is a genus of tree ferns, the type genus of the fern order Cyatheales. The genus name ''Cyathea'' is derived from the Greek ''kyatheion'', meaning "little cup", and refers to the cup-shaped sori on the underside of the fronds.
