Alpine World Ski Championships 1987
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1987 were held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, from 27 January to 8 February 1987. The alpine world championships included Super-G for the first time; it was first run on the World Cup level four seasons earlier, in December 1982. The host Swiss team won eight gold medals out of ten, including all five women's events. Crans-Montana is a municipality in the district of Sierre in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. On 1 January 2017 the former municipalities of Chermignon, Mollens, Montana and Randogne merged to form the new municipality of Crans-Montana. Markus Wasmeier
Markus Wasmeier (; born 9 September 1963 is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Germany. He was world champion and twice Olympic champion. At the 1985 World Championships at Bormio, Italy, he won the Giant Slalom at age 21, before recording a World Cup victory. Born in Schliersee, Bavaria, West Germany, Wasmeier's first World Cup Race was on 5 February 1983, when he finished 49th in the Downhill Race at St. Anton am Arlberg. He gained his first World Cup points in January 1984 by capturing 10th place in the Alpine Combined at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and that December, he achieved his first podium in (Giant Slalom at Sestiere, Italy). Tamara McKinney
Tamara McKinney (born October 16, 1962) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. She won four World Cup season titles, most notably the 1983 overall, the first American woman title holder for a quarter century. McKinney's other three season titles were in giant slalom (1981, 1983) and slalom (1984). She was a world champion in the combined event in 1989, her final year of competition. Her half-brother Steve McKinney was a world-record holding speed skier, setting seven world records and breaking his own record twice. Sylvia Eder
Sylvia Eder (born 24 August 1965) is a former Austrian alpine skier. Biography Born in Leogang, she won her first downhill race at Bad Gastein, Austria in 1982 at the age of 17. The downhill remained her specialty discipline throughout her early career. She later developed an interest in the slalom, at which she won the world championship in 1985 in Bormio and the silver medal, after Erika Hess of Switzerland, at the World Cup in 1987. Later Eder focused on the giant slalom and the super-G, the latter becoming her main discipline. In 1993 she won a silver medal at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Morioka. Roswitha Steiner
Roswitha Stadlober (née Steiner) (born 14 June 1963 in Radstadt, Salzburg) is an Austrian former alpine skier. Career She concluded her career at the end of the 1987/1988 season by clinching her second Slalom World Cup title, also winning her last race in Aspen. She is married to Alois Stadlober, a former Austrian cross-country skier and world champion at the 1999 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Their son Luis Stadlober and daughter Teresa Stadlober are also competitive cross-country skiers. Roswitha has served as a member of the executive committee of the Austrian Ski Federation since 2011. In October 2021, she became the first female president of the Federation, after having served as senior vice-president. Erika Hess
Erika Hess (born 6 March 1962) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. One of the best female racers of the 1980s, Hess had 31 World Cup wins (22 in slalom), four slalom titles (1981– 83 and 1985), and two overall titles ( 1982, 1984). She also won six World Championship gold medals between 1982 and 1987, and took bronze in the slalom at the 1980 Winter Olympics at age 17. Hess missed another medal in 1985, when she led after the first run of the slalom at the "Stelvio" course at Bormio, but failed to finish the second leg. Vreni Schneider
Verena "Vreni" Schneider (born 26 November 1964) is a retired ski racer from Switzerland. She is the most successful alpine ski racer of her country, the fourth most successful female ski racer ever (after Lindsey Vonn, Annemarie Moser-Pröll and Mikaela Shiffrin) and was voted "Swiss Sportswoman of the Century". Early life Schneider was born in Elm, the daughter of a shoemaker. Mateja Svet (); born 16 August 1968) is a former Slovenian alpine skier, who competed for Yugoslavia from 1984 to 1990. Michela Figini (born 7 April 1966) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. She is an Olympic, World Cup and world champion. Career Figini made her World Cup debut at age 16 in January 1983 and won the downhill at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo at age 17. Through 2014, she remains the youngest Olympic champion in alpine skiing. She won the downhill the following year at the 1985 World Championships. Maria Walliser
Maria Walliser (born 27 May 1963) is a Swiss former alpine skiing, alpine skier. Career Walliser grew up in Mosnang, the daughter of a wealthy cattle breeder. She made her World Cup debut in 1980. Together with her fellow Swiss Erika Hess, Michela Figini and Vreni Schneider she dominated female alpine skiing during the 1980s. Among her many successes, she won two overall FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cups (1986 and 1987). Walliser also won three world titles in 1987 and 1989, as well as three Olympic medals at 1988 Winter Olympics, 1988 Calgary and 1984 Winter Olympics, 1984 Sarajevo.
