Alpine Skiing At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Super-G
The Men's Super-G competition of the Torino 2006 Olympics was held at Sestriere, Italy, on Saturday, February 18. In super-G competitions, skiers must navigate between gates at high speed, and the gates are further apart than in slalom and giant slalom competitions. As in the downhill, there is only one run of the super-G. The defending World Cup and world champion in super-G was Bode Miller of the United States, Austria's Hermann Maier led the current season and won the Olympic gold medal in 1998; the defending Olympic champion was Kjetil André Aamodt of Norway. Aamodt won the gold medal again, Maier took the silver, and the bronze medalist was Ambrosi Hoffmann of Switzerland; Miller did not finish. Through 2018, this is the only successful Olympic title defense in a men's alpine speed event. It was Aamodt's third victory in the Olympic super-G (1992, 2002, 2006) and eighth Olympic medal. Sestriere
Sestriere (/se'strjɛre/) ( oc, Sestrieras, pms, Ël Sestrier, french: Sestrières) is a ski resort in Piedmont, Italy, a ''comune'' (municipality) of the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is situated in Val Susa, from the French border. Its name derives from Latin: ''ad petram sistrariam'', that is at sixty Roman miles from Turin. Peter Fill
Peter Fill (born 12 November 1982) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from northern Italy. Born in Brixen, South Tyrol, he formerly competed in all disciplines, and later focused on the speed events of downhill, super-G, and combined. Fill won the World Cup season title in downhill in 2016 and in 2017, and the combined title in 2018. Career Fill is an all-round skier. In the 2007 season, Fill was among the overall leaders for the overall World Cup title, the first Italian since Alberto Tomba to rank in the overall top ten. Fill learned to ski at the age of 3 with the help of his first teacher Frieda Senoner. He achieved his first successes during his middle-school years, while he was coached by Peter Thomaseth. Didier Cuche
Didier Cuche (born 16 August 1974) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. Career Born in Le Pâquier, Neuchâtel, he competed in the downhill and super-G, along with the giant slalom. He won the World Cup downhill and super-G title for the 2011 season and has won three previous downhill titles in 2010, 2008 and 2007, along with a giant slalom title in 2009. Cuche has 21 World Cup race victories, along with 67 podiums (top three) and 181 top ten finishes. He is also an Olympic silver medalist and has won a total of four World Championships medals (a gold, two silvers, and a bronze). He retired from competition following the 2012 season. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Cuche was the silver medalist in the super-G, where he had exactly the same time as Hans Knauss resulting in a rare sharing of the medal (no bronze medal was awarded). Johannes "Hannes" Reichelt (born 5 July 1980) is a retired Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer. He competed mainly in downhill and super-G, as well as in giant slalom. Biography Born in Altenmarkt im Pongau in Salzburg, Reichelt made his World Cup debut in December 2001. He made his first podium in December 2002 and won his first World Cup race, a super-G, in December 2005. Reichelt also won the Europa Cup overall title in 2005, as well as the Europa Cup season title in giant slalom in 2003. Reichelt won the World Cup season title in the Super G in 2008, a single point ahead of runner-up Didier Cuche. Daron Louis Rahlves (born June 12, 1973) is a former American World Cup alpine ski racer and freestyle skier. Biography Born in Walnut Creek, California, and raised in Northern California, Rahlves attended the Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont and currently resides in Truckee, California. He retired from racing at the end of the 2006 season with twelve World Cup victories and a world championship. Rahlves earned three World Championships medals, a gold in 2001 in the Super-G and a silver and bronze (downhill and giant slalom) in 2005. François Bourque (born November 18, 1984 in New Richmond, Quebec) is a Canadian alpine skier. François Bourque Began his national debut in 2002. Bourque won the super-G event at the 2003 Junior World Championships and the combined event at the 2004 Junior World Championships. Scott Macartney (born January 19, 1978) is a retired American World Cup alpine ski racer. He concentrated in the speed events of downhill and super-G. Biography Born in Seattle, Washington, Macartney was raised in suburban Redmond, where his parents were public school teachers. He skied at the Crystal Mountain ski area, located southeast of Seattle, where his parents were members of the volunteer ski patrol on weekends. Macartney did not attend a ski academy, but graduated from Redmond High School in 1996 while working his way up through regional teams in the Northwest with limited funding. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. Marco Büchel (born 4 November 1971 in Walenstadt, Switzerland) is a retired alpine ski racer from Liechtenstein. He participated in a record-tying six Winter Olympics, starting in 1992 and ending in 2010. On 18 January 2008, Büchel won a World Cup Super-G race at Kitzbühel, and set a then record as the oldest winner of a World Cup race at the age of . Aksel Lund Svindal (born 26 December 1982) is a Norwegian former World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Lørenskog in Akershus county, Svindal is a two-time overall World Cup champion (2007 and 2009), an Olympic gold medalist in super-G at the 2010 Winter Olympics and in downhill at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and a five-time World Champion in downhill, giant slalom, and super combined ( 2007 Åre, 2009 Val-d'Isère, 2011 Garmisch, and 2013 Schladming). Erik Guay
Erik Guay () (born August 5, 1981) is a Canadian former World Cup alpine ski racer. Racing out of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Guay won the World Cup season title in super-G in 2010 and was the world champion in downhill in 2011, as well as in the super-G in 2017. With 25 World Cup podiums, he is the career leader for Canada. Career Born in Montreal, Guay was five when he competed in his first ski race, and when he was twelve his father, himself a ski team coach, took him for professional coaching. His first podium came in November 2003, when he finished 2nd in a downhill at Lake Louise. He finished in second twice in 2005 in the super-G and third once in downhill.
