Aloja Municipality
Aloja Municipality ( lv, Alojas novads) is a former municipality in Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Aloja town with its countryside territory, Staicele town with its countryside territory, Braslava Parish and Brīvzemnieki Parish, the administrative centre being Aloja. In 2010 Aloja Parish was created from the countryside territory of Aloja town and Staicele Parish was created from the countryside territory of Staicele town. On 1 July 2021, Aloja Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Limbaži Municipality. Aloja, Latvia
Aloja (german: Allendorf) is a town in Limbaži Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, close to the border with Estonia. Until 2009 it was within the former Limbaži District. Aloja as a settlement was first mentioned in written sources in 1449. Aloja saw rapid development after Latvian agrarian reforms in 1920. In 1925 Aloja was granted a status of a village and it became also a centre of the parish. In 1936 new Rīga- Rūjiena railway line was constructed through Aloja. In 1992 Aloja was granted town rights. Latvian Farmers' Union
The Latvian Farmers' Union ( lv, Latvijas Zemnieku savienība, LZS) is an agrarian political party in Latvia. Initially formed in 1917 during the period of Latvian War of Independence, it was banned in 1934. It was re-established in 1990. It is positioned in the centre on the political spectrum and it has expressed conservative and nationalistic rhetoric. Since 2002, the party has been a part of the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), together with the Latvian Green Party. It was formerly a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. Merger (politics)
A merger, consolidation or amalgamation, in a political or administrative sense, is the combination of two or more political or administrative entities, such as municipalities (in other words cities, towns, etc.), counties, districts, etc., into a single entity. This term is used when the process occurs within a sovereign entity. Unbalanced growth or outward expansion of one neighbor may necessitate an administrative decision to merge (see urban sprawl). Staicele
Staicele (; german: link=no, Staizel; liv, Staitsõl) is a town in Latvia, and birthplace of Latvian conductor Jānis Zirnis. The area of Staicele has been inhabited only since the 19th century when a tavern and ferryman's house on the banks of Salaca river are mentioned. In 1887 the owners of Rozēni and Ungura manors built a bridge over Salaca in that place. In 1897 a paper mill was built and a larger settlement started to grow around it. In 1913 a narrow gauge railway line was built to the factory. After the First World War Staicele became the centre of the Rozēni parish. It received village status in 1925. In the Latvian SSR, Staicele became an Urban-type settlement in 1950. It received town rights in 1992. From 2009 until 2021, Staicele town was part of the former Aloja Municipality. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (''novadi'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, plural''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional.
