Almadane, Louisiana
Almadane is an unincorporated community in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. The community is located to the south of Evans and west of Rosepine on the western edge of Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area on the scenic Myths and Legends Byway. Etymology When the community was founded the first postmaster Daniel R. Knight needed to give the community a name. He decided to use his name combined the names of two other citizens. The names of the three men, Al Damereal, Mann Huddleston and Daniel R. Knight became ''Al-ma-dan''. The postmaster added an ''e'' to the end of the newly formed name and submitted the paperwork to the United States Post Office and it was accepted. History The settlement of Almadane was chosen due to the location on the Sabine River where it was possible for residents to send and receive goods by steamboat. Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area is a tract of protected area located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) leases the land from Hancock Timber. History The land formally belonged to Forest Capital Partners, LLC, and was purchased, by ''Molpus Woodlands Group'' and ''The Hancock Timber Resource Group'' (Hancock Timber) in a 1.88 million acre land deal. Location The property is bordered on the north by LA 8 (west of Anacoco Lake) and LA 111, that runs from Burr Ferry, through Evans towards Merryville, forms the western border, with the WMA crossing the highway in three areas in the southern half. Rosepine is a town in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Polk South Micropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1897 the Kansas City, Shreveport & Gulf Railway Company (KCS&G), owned by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (KCP&G) was completed through Rosepine, Dequincy, and on to Port Arthur, Texas. By 1901 sawmills of Brice Brothers and Craft, Diamond Lumber Company Ltd, Lewis and Williams, and Rosepine Lumber Company were in operation.
