Allamakee Community School District
The Allamakee Community School District (also known as ACSD) is a public school district based in the city of Waukon in Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. The district is mainly in Allamakee County, with a small portion in Winneshiek County. It serves the cities of Waukon, Harpers Ferry, and Waterville, and the surrounding rural areas. History Because of budget cuts, 26 teachers' positions were terminated in 2009. Jay Mathis was hired as Superintendent in 2018. Mathis is an alumnus of the district, and previously served as Superintendent at Eldora–New Providence Community School District. Waukon, Iowa
Waukon is a city in Makee Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, United States, and the county seat of Allamakee County. The population was 3,827 at the time of the 2020 census. History Waukon is often said to be named for Waukon Decorah, a Ho Chunk (Winnebago) leader who was a U.S. ally during the 1832 Black Hawk War, although the city is also said to be named for his son Chief John Waukon. Winnebagos lived in this area of Iowa in the 1840s, before being forced to relocate to Minnesota. The first white settler arrived in 1849, and the town was founded and the Waukon Post Office opened in 1853. A courthouse was completed in 1861, and the county seat was moved to Waukon in 1867 after 8 elections attempting to decide the location of the county seat.W. E. Allamakee County () is the northeasternmost county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,061. Its county seat is Waukon. History Allamakee County was formed on February 20, 1847. The derivation of the name is debated, some believing it was the name of an Indian chief, others think it was named for Allen Magee, an early historic trader. The first Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon, built in 1861, now serves as the Allamakee County Historical Museum. The present Allamakee County Court House was built in 1940. Winneshiek County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,070. The county seat is Decorah. History A largely rural and agricultural county, Winneshiek County has a rich cultural history from Czech, Slovak, English, Irish, German, Swiss, and Norwegian immigrants that have settled within its boundaries. The county was originally settled in 1848 in present-day Bloomfield Township (near Castalia, Iowa) and in Washington Township (near Fort Atkinson, Iowa). It was organized in 1847, and named after a chief of the Winnebago tribe. In 1980, Winneshiek County reported a population of 21,842. Like much of Iowa during the 1980s it witnessed a population loss, dropping to 20,847 according to the 1990 United States Census. Northeast Iowa Conference
The Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) is a six school athletic conference made up of mid-sized schools in the Northeast Corner of Iowa. The conference dates in 1920, making it one of Iowa's oldest existing athletic conferences. Members Departing members highlighted in red. Waukon High School
Waukon High School is a public high school located in the city of Waukon, Iowa. It is the only high school in the Allamakee Community School District and serves many of the surrounding towns, including: Harpers Ferry, Waterville, and Dorchester. 2007 Renovation In 2007, a brand new $16 million addition was built onto the Senior High building. Previously Jr. High students attended a building separate from the Senior High. Both Jr. High and Senior High students will now use the new addition to the school. Waukon Wellness Center was also built and opened across the street from the school, Matt Hoover, season two winner of NBC's ''The Biggest Loser'', spoke at the grand opening.
