Alhambra, Phoenix
Alhambra is an urban village of Phoenix, Arizona. Location Alhambra encompasses an area south of Northern Avenue, west of 7th Street, east of 43rd Avenue, and north of Grand Avenue or the Grand Canal. History The community's name was chosen by William John Murphy (1839–1923) to designate one of the four North Phoenix areas he sub-divided. It was built principally to satisfy the housing needs of a growing population in the aftermath of World War II. Many of those who moved to the area discovered it when they were stationed at Luke Air Force Base. Demographics As of 2010, Alhambra had a population of 127,764 living in an area of roughly 20 square miles, giving a density of about 6,400/square mile. 61.1% of residents were white, 6.6% were black or African American, 3.4% were American Indian or Alaska Native, and 4.1% were Asian or Pacific Islander. 21% of residents were some other race, and 3.9% were persons of two or more races. William John Murphy
William John Murphy (August 23, 1839 – April 17, 1923) was an American businessman, contractor, land developer and founder of the Arizona Improvement Company. He is also remembered as the "Founder of Glendale, Arizona" and an important contributor to much of the early development in the Phoenix area. Early life Murphy was born in New Hartford, New York, to George Alexander Murphy and Nancy Allen, both immigrants from County Antrim, Northern Ireland. His family soon moved to the state of Ohio, where he received his primary education. During his youth, his family moved to Chicago and later Pontiac, Illinois, where he continued to receive his education. Murphy joined the Union Army upon the outbreak of the American Civil War and participated in the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, as an officer under the command of General William T. Sherman. Luke Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States., effective 20 December 2007 It is located west of the central business district of Glendale, and west of Phoenix. Luke AFB is a major training base of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), training pilots in the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Christown Spectrum Mall
Christown Spectrum is the oldest operating mall in Phoenix, Arizona and was the third shopping mall built in the city. It is located at 1703 W. Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, Arizona. The name Christown Spectrum is derived from Chris-Town Mall and Phoenix Spectrum Mall, previous names. Today it exists as an enclosed shopping mall, although the enclosed portion of the mall was greatly reduced when redevelopment changed the configuration closer to a power center. Christown Spectrum's anchor stores are SuperTarget, Walmart Supercenter, and soon to be occupied by another anchor store, American Furniture Warehouse, which will open later this year or early next year.
