Alfredo Arévalo
Alfredo Arévalo Reyes (born February 20, 1976) is a Guatemalan marathon runner. In 2004, he achieved both his personal best and a national record-breaking time of 2:12:53 at the National Capital Marathon in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Arevalo made his official debut for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he finished seventy-seventh in the men's marathon, outside his personal best of 2:34:02. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Arevalo competed again for the second time in men's marathon, along with his compatriot José Amado García. He finished the race in sixty-third place by twelve seconds behind Montenegro's Goran Stojiljković, with a time of 2:28:26. Uspantán
Uspantán is a municipality in the Guatemalan department of El Quiché. It is one of the largest municipalities of El Quiché and stretches from the mountainous highlands in the South to the tropical lowlands in the North. The municipal seat is in Villa de San Miguel Uspantán with a population of 2,800. The men's marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 24 August at 7:30am in Beijing, ending in the Beijing National Stadium. It was (as of today) the last time in Summer Olympics history that the start and/or finish of the men's marathon route was located inside the Olympic Stadium. Ninety-five athletes from 56 nations competed. The winner of the event was Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya, who set an Olympic record in the time of two hours, six minutes, and 32 seconds. It was Kenya's first victory in the men's marathon. Morocco won its first medal in the event since 1960, with Jaouad Gharib's silver. Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia took bronze. 2001 World Championships In Athletics
The 8th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between 3 August and 12 August and was the first time the event had visited North America. The music for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was composed by Canadian composers Jan Randall and Cassius Khan. The ceremonies also featured a 1000 voice choir, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
