Alfred Wigram
Alfred Money-Wigram (sometimes Alfred Wigram, 21 July 1856 – 13 October 1899) was a British brewery company director, and Member of Parliament for the Romford division of Essex from 1894 to 1897. Money-Wigram was born on 21 July 1856.Look and Learn describe him as a "wealthy banker"; the International Brewers' Journal records an Alfred Money-Wigram as a shareholder in Reid's Brewery Company, and he is listed as a director of Reid's Brewery Company Limited in a successful 1894 taxation case before the High Court of Justice. Alfred Money-Wigram was elected Conservative MP for Romford in an 1894 by-election on 2 April 1894 arising from the death of the incumbent Conservative MP, James Theobald. James Theobald (politician)
James Theobald (1829–10 March 1894) was a British Conservative politician from Essex, who represented Romford in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1886 to 1894. James Theobald of Grays Thurrock and of Havering atte Bower, Essex, was the eldest son of James Theobald of Hyde Abbey in Hampshire, and Sarah, daughter of the Reverend Charles Richards, Canon of Winchester. He was born in Winchester in 1829. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, where he matriculated 30 May 1849, age nineteen, took his B.A. and M.A. in 1859, and became a Student of the Inner Temple in 1851. In 1865 he married Mable Laura, daughter of W.R. Eaton Esq. of Cheshire. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Essex, Lord of the Manor of Grays Thurrock and a large landowner in the county. The 1895 United Kingdom general election was held from 13 July to 7 August 1895. William Gladstone had retired as Prime Minister the previous year, and Queen Victoria, disregarding Gladstone's advice to name Lord Spencer as his successor, appointed the Earl of Rosebery as the new Prime Minister. Rosebery's government found itself largely in a state of paralysis due to a power struggle between him and William Harcourt, the Liberal leader in the Commons. The situation came to a head on 21 June, when Parliament voted to dismiss Secretary of State for War Henry Campbell-Bannerman; Rosebery, realising that the government would likely not survive a motion of no confidence were one to be brought, promptly resigned as Prime Minister.
