Alfred Mueller
Alfred H. Mueller (born June 9, 1939) is an American theoretical physicist, and the Enrico Fermi Professor of Physics at Columbia University. Mueller studied at Iowa State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1961 and in 1965 completed his PhD at MIT. He then served until 1971 as a post-doc at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Since 1972 he has been at Columbia University. He was also a visiting scientist at the Institute for Advanced Study (1975), at the nuclear research centers in Saclay, the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, New York University, and at SLAC. Among other subjects, Mueller studied the high-order perturbation theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and tests of QCD "hard" scattering processes of hadrons and QCD in nuclear physics and heavy ion collisions. In particle physics, a hadron (; grc, ἁδρός, hadrós; "stout, thick") is a composite subatomic particle made of two or more quarks held together by the strong interaction. They are analogous to molecules that are held together by the electric force. Most of the mass of ordinary matter comes from two hadrons: the proton and the neutron, while most of the mass of the protons and neutrons is in turn due to the binding energy of their constituent quarks, due to the strong force. Hadrons are categorized into two broad families: baryons, made of an odd number of quarks (usually three quarks) and mesons, made of an even number of quarks (usually two quarks: one quark and one antiquark). Particle physics or high energy physics is the study of fundamental particles and forces that constitute matter and radiation. The fundamental particles in the universe are classified in the Standard Model as fermions (matter particles) and bosons (force-carrying particles). George Sterman
George Franklin Sterman (born June 2, 1946) is an American theoretical physicist and the Director of the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook University where he holds the rank Distinguished Professor. Background George Sterman received an A.B. from the University of Chicago in 1968. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1974, and held research associate positions at the University of Illinois (1974–1976), Stony Brook University (1976–1978) and the Institute for Advanced Study (1978–1979), before joining the faculty of the C.N.
