Alfred M. Wood
Alfred M. Wood (April 19, 1825 – July 28, 1895) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On April 13, 1858, Wood was commissioned as colonel of the 14th New York Militia (14th Brooklyn), a local antebellum militia regiment. When the Civil War erupted, Wood enlisted at the age of 35 on April 4, 1861, in Brooklyn, New York, to serve three years. He was wounded and captured on July 21, 1861, at the First Battle of Manassas, also known as the First Battle of Bull Run, exchanged for a Confederate colonel and returned to field duty. Because of his wounds received at the battle of First Bull Run he was discharged for disability on October 18, 1861. After the war Alfred Wood became very involved in the post war affairs of his beloved 14th Brooklyn helping the veterans of the unit. New York Militia
The New York Guard (NYG) is the State Defense Force, state defense force of New York State, also called The New York State Military Reserve. Originally called the New York State Militia it can trace its lineage back to the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The organization now has a unified command structure, while formerly it contained an Army Division and an Air Division. The missions of the New York Guard include augmentation, assistance, and support of the New York Army National Guard and New York Air National Guard respectively and aide to civil authorities in New York State. The Eastern Iron Brigade, also known as the Iron Brigade of the East and First Iron Brigade, was a brigade of infantry, that served in the Union Army's Army of the Potomac, during the American Civil War. For much of its service, it was designated as the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, I Corps. Among its commanding officers were General John P.
