Alfred Dompert (23 December 1914 – 11 August 1991) was a German runner who won a bronze medal in the 3000 m steeplechase at the 1936 Summer Olympics The 1936 Summer Olympics (German: ''Olympische Sommerspiele 1936''), officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad (German: ''Spiele der XI. After retiring from competitions he worked as a sports administrator in Württemberg and was a youth trainer in the Skiing Association of Schwaben. In 1950 he became the first athlete to receive the Rudolf-Harbig-Gedächtnispreis, and in 1956 he was awarded the Golden Needle of the German Track and Field Association. The steeplechase is an obstacle race in athletics, which derives its name from the steeplechase in horse racing. The foremost version of the event is the 3000 metres steeplechase. The 2000 metres steeplechase is the next most common distance. A 1000 metres steeplechase is occasionally used in youth athletics. History The event originated in Ireland, where horses and riders raced from one town's steeple to the next: the steeples were used as markers due to their visibility over long distances. Along the way, runners inevitably had to jump streams and low stone walls separating estates.
