Oslo
Oslo ( , , or ; sma, Oslove) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. The municipality of Oslo had a population of in 2022, while the city's greater urban area had a population of in 2019, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of in 2021. During the Viking Age the area was part of Viken. Oslo was founded as a city at the end of the Viking Age in 1040 under the name Ánslo, and established as a ''kaupstad'' or trading place in 1048 by Harald Hardrada. Rear Admiral
Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. The term originated in the days of naval sailing squadrons and can trace its origins to the Royal Navy. Each naval squadron was assigned an admiral as its head, who commanded from the centre vessel and directed the squadron's activities. The admiral would in turn be assisted by a vice admiral, who commanded the lead ships that bore the brunt of a battle. In the rear of the squadron, a third admiral commanded the remaining ships and, as this section was considered to be in the least danger, the admiral in command of it was typically the most junior. Francis Bull
Francis Bull (4 October 1887–4 July 1974) was a Norwegian literary historian, professor at the University of Oslo for more than thirty years, essayist and speaker, and magazine editor. Early and personal life Bull was born in Kristiania, son of medical doctor Edvard Isak Hambro Bull (1845–1925) and Ida Marie Sofie Paludan (1861–1957). He was brother to theatre director Johan Peter Bull, historian and politician Edvard Bull and genealogist Theodor Bull. Through Edvard Bull he was the uncle of historian Edvard Bull. He was also nephew to military officer Karl Sigwald Johannes Bull, grandnephew to Anders Sandøe Ørsted Bull, great-grandson to Georg Jacob Bull and great-great-grandson to Chief Justice Johan Randulf Bull. Jakob Von Der Lippe
Jakob von der Lippe (28 July 1872 – 1953) was a Norwegian admiral. He was born in Fjell. He was a grandson of bishop Jacob von der Lippe and a son of dean Johan Nordahl Brun von der Lippe (1838–1915). Through his uncle Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe he was a first cousin once removed of Frits von der Lippe, Just Lippe and Jens von der Lippe. He had the same father, and was thus a half-brother, of Anton Barth von der Lippe. On 13 October 1916 von der Lippe was made the first regular director of the Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service, after the service was permanently organized and sorted under the Royal Norwegian Navy's shooting and signals school, which von der Lippe was the head of. On 14 February the following year von der Lippe was relieved of his position at the shooting and signals school and made full-time commander of the Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service. Karl Friedrich Griffin Dawes
Karl Friedrich Griffin Dawes (5 January 1861 – 8 April 1941) was a Norwegian naval officer and politician for the Liberal Party. He is best known as the Norwegian Minister of Defence from 1907 to 1908. Career He was born in Fredrikstad as the son of engineer and merchant Henry Dawes and his wife Caroline Griffin. He started on a career in the military, graduating from the Norwegian Naval Academy in 1884 and the Military College in 1885. He was promoted successively to second lieutenant in 1882, premier lieutenant in 1885, captain in 1894, captain commander in 1900 and commander in 1903. From 1895 to 1901 he worked in the Ministry of Defence, and from 1901 to 1902 he stayed in Horten. He was a member of Kristiania city council for the term 1898–1901, and was elected to Horten city council in 1901.
