Alexej Baumgärtner
Alexej Baumgärtner (also spelled Baumgaertner; born 13 July 1988) is a Russian-born German speed skater. Baumgärtner competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics for Germany. In the 5000 metres he finished 21st, and in the 10000 metres he was 13th. As of September 2014, Baumgärtner's best performance at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships is 8th, in the 2012 10000 metres. He won a silver medal at the 2007 World Junior Speed Skating Championships as part of the German team pursuit squad. Baumgärtner made his World Cup debut in January 2009. As of September 2014, Baumgärtner has three podium finishes, as part of the German team pursuit squad. 2011–12 ISU Speed Skating World Cup
The 2011–12 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, officially the ''Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating 2011–2012'', was a series of international speed skating competitions which ran the entire season. The season started on 18 November 2011 in Chelyabinsk, Russia, and ended on 11 March 2012 in Berlin, Germany. In total, seven competition weekends were held at six different locations, twelve cups were contested (six for men, and six for women), and 72 races took place. The mass start was introduced as a new event for the season. Additionally, the team sprint was contested as a demonstration event at both Heerenveen competitions. The World Cup is organized by the International Skating Union (ISU). Heerenveen (, fry, It Hearrenfean ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat"). Heerenveen was not one of the traditional eleven cities in Friesland (Fryslân) as it did not have so-called city rights. However, it is now one of the larger municipalities of the province. ISU Speed Skating World Cup
The ISU Speed Skating World Cup is a series of international speed skating competitions, organised annually by the International Skating Union since the winter of 1985–86 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, 1985–86. Every year during the winter season, a number of competitions on different distances and on different locations are held. Skaters can earn points at each competition, and the skater who has the most points on a given distance at the end of the series is the winner. Initially not very popular with skaters nor spectators, the World Cup has gradually become more and more popular, and this was due to the creation of the World Single Distance Championships. The results of the separate distances in the World Cup ranking are the main qualifying method for the World Single Distance Championships.
