Alexander Stewart (British Army Officer)
Major-General Alexander Stewart (c. 1739 – 16 December 1794) was a Scottish officer in the British Army and a politician. Military career Born the second son of John Stewart MP (died 1769) of Castle Stewart, and brother of William Stewart MP, Stewart was commissioned as an ensign in the 37th Regiment of Foot on 8 April 1755. He commanded a field force at Orangeburg and fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs during the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Third Foot on 7 July 1775 ; Colonel in the army on 16 May 1780 ; and promoted Major-General on 28 April 1790. He was granted the colonelcy of the 2nd (The Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot on 20 November 1793.Cannon, p. 40 He served in the Duke of York's army during the Flanders Campaign., commanding the First Brigade of infantry during the retreat to Holland in 1794. Wigtownshire
Wigtownshire or the County of Wigtown (, ) is one of the historic counties of Scotland, covering an area in the south-west of the country. Until 1975, Wigtownshire was an administrative county used for local government. Since 1975 the area has formed part of Dumfries and Galloway for local government purposes. Wigtownshire continues to be used as a territory for land registration, being a registration county. The historic county is all within the slightly larger Wigtown Area, which is one of the lieutenancy areas of Scotland and was used in local government as the Wigtown District from 1975 to 1996. Wigtownshire forms the western part of the medieval lordship of Galloway, which retained a degree of autonomy until it was fully absorbed by Scotland in the 13th century. Kirkcudbright Stewartry, later known as Kirkcudbright or Kirkcudbrightshire, was a Scottish constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. It was represented by one Member of Parliament (MP). Creation The British parliamentary constituency was created in 1708 following the Acts of Union, 1707 and replaced the former Parliament of Scotland shire constituency of Kirkcudbright Stewartry. The first election in the stewartry was in 1708. In 1707–08, members of the 1702-1707 Parliament of Scotland were co-opted to serve in the 1st Parliament of Great Britain. Patrick Heron (1736–1803)
Patrick Heron of Kirroughtree ( – 9 June 1803) was a Scottish banker and politician. From 1794 to 1803 he was a Whig Member of Parliament for Kirkcudbright Stewartry. He was the grandson of Patrick Heron of Kirroughtrie, who had been MP for the Stewartry from 1727 to 1741. His mother Margaret was the daughter of John Mackie of Palgoun. He was educated at the University of Glasgow. He married Jean Home, in 1761, daughter of Henry Home, Lord Kames, but the couple were divorced in 1772. In 1775, he married Lady Elizabeth Cochrane, daughter of Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald, and cousin to the diarist James Boswell. He was a founder of a bank in Ayr, Douglas, Heron & Company, which went bankrupt during the credit crisis of 1772. Heron was elected unopposed at a by-election in March 1795 as the MP for the Kirkcudbright Stewartry, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Alexander Stewart.
