Alexander Munro Of Bearcrofts
Sir Alexander Munro of Bearcrofts (died 4 January 1704) was a Scottish soldier and politician of the 17th century. Lineage The Munro of Milntown family descends from John Munro, 1st of Milntown, the second son of Hugh Munro, 9th Baron of Foulis (d. 1425). Three generations after John Munro, 1st of Milntown, is George Munro, 4th of Milntown, who became one of the most prominent ministers in the Reformed Church in the north of Scotland. His third son, also called George, 1st of Pitlunde, followed in his footsteps. This George's second eldest son was Alexander Munro, 1st of Bearcrofts. Career Alexander took up the army as his profession and served for some time as a Major in an infantry regiment in Ireland. He was knighted for his distinguished services in the army and was appointed Commissioner of Stirling. Alexander fought for King Charles II at the Battle of Worcester (3 September 1651). Alexander Munro (sculptor)
Alexander Munro (26 October 1825 – 1 January 1871) was a British sculptor of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He concentrated on portraiture and statues, but is best known for his Rossetti-influenced figure-group ''Paolo and Francesca'' (1852), which has often been identified as the epitome of Pre-Raphaelite sculpture. Lionel Cust described his work as "sketchy and wanting in strength, but full of refinement and true feeling." Life Son of a stonemason, his talents were supported by financial assistance from his father's employer, the Duchess of Sutherland. From 1842 he assisted and trained in the Edinburgh studio of the sculptor Alexander Handyside Ritchie. He came to London in 1848 to study sculpture under Charles Barry. At this time he also worked as a mason on the new Palace of Westminster. Alexander Munro (30 November 1870 – 3 January 1934) was a British strongman, wrestler, and tug of war competitor who competed in the latter sport in the 1908 Summer Olympics and in the 1912 Summer Olympics. In 1908 he won the bronze medal as member of the British team ''Metropolitan Police "K" Division''. Four years later he won the silver medal as member of the joint City of London Police-Metropolitan Police "K" Division British team. Alex Munro (6 March 1911 – 20 January 1986) was a Scottish actor and comedian. Career Born as Alexander Neilson Horsburgh in Shettleston, Glasgow, he joined his brother Archie and sister June in an acrobatic act called ''The Star Trio''. They later changed their name to ''The Horsburgh Brothers and Agnes'' and became part of Florrie Forde's music hall company with Flanagan and Allen. During World War Two, Munro toured with the RAF show, ''Contact'', and had his own BBC radio series ''The Size of It''. He headlined in a number of British variety theatres, before finally making his home in Llandudno, Wales. He was given creative control of the Llandudno Pier Pavilion Theatre in the 1970s. The ''Alex Munro Show'' ran at the Happy Valley in Llandudno for 30 years. Alexander Dewar Munro (6 April 1912 – 29 August 1986) was a Scottish professional football player. Club career Born in the West Lothian village of Carriden, Bo'ness, Munro began his career with Bo'ness F.C., before reverting to junior football with Champfleurie and Newtongrange Star. He returned to league football when signed by Hearts in April 1932 and had gradually worked his way into the first team by 1934, appearing mainly as a left-winger. He switched to the right flank from 1934–35 and that season helped Hearts to the Scottish Cup semi-finals, playing in both games as Double-winning Rangers proved too strong in a replay at Hampden Park. Munro joined Blackpool in March 1937 for £3,500. He went on to spend thirteen years with the Tangerines, making 136 league appearances and scoring seventeen goals for them. Alexander Munro (3 October 1944 – 24 May 2009) was a Scottish footballer who spent his career playing in England and South Africa. The son of former Scotland international Alex Munro, Munro Jr. represented Glasgow Schoolboys as a child before joining Bristol Rovers as a seventeen-year-old, following a successful trial. Munro initially played as a left half, but was soon moved to outside left where he was a regular between 1966 and 1968. Later in his career he was converted to a left back, a position where he broke his leg in the Gloucestershire Cup final in May 1968, but after a year he had recovered sufficiently to play in the position regularly until he was replaced by Lindsay Parsons in 1970. Following the loss of his position at Bristol Rovers, Munro moved to South Africa in 1971, when he joined Durban City.
