Alexander Dew Chaplin (10 April 1872 – 18 January 1938) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Chaplin was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Port Granby, Ontario and became a manufacturer. The son of William Lamont Chaplin and Harriet Dew, he was educated in St. Catharines, Ontario St. Catharines is the largest city in Canada's Niagara Region and the sixth largest urban area in the province of Ontario. Clarington, Ontario
Clarington (2021 population 101,427) is a lower-tier municipality in the Regional Municipality of Durham in Ontario, Canada. It was incorporated in 1973 as the town of Newcastle with the merging of the town of Bowmanville, the Village of Newcastle and the townships of Clarke and Darlington, and was established on January 1 1974. In 1993, the town was renamed Clarington, a portmanteau of the names of the two former townships. Bowmanville is the largest community in the municipality and is the home of the municipal offices. Clarington is part of the Oshawa census metropolitan area in the eastern end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). 1926 Canadian Federal Election
The 1926 Canadian federal election was held on September 14, 1926, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 16th Parliament of Canada. The election was called after an event known as the King–Byng affair. In the 1925 federal election, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party of Canada had won fewer seats in the House of Commons of Canada than the Conservatives of Arthur Meighen. King, however, was determined to continue to govern with the support of the Progressive Party. The combined Liberal and Progressive caucuses gave Mackenzie King a plurality of seats in the House of Commons, and the ability to form a minority government. The agreement collapsed, however, after a scandal, and King approached the governor-general of Canada, Baron Byng of Vimy, to seek dissolution of the Parliament. Gordon Chaplin
Gordon Chaplin (31 July 1907 – 27 June 1964) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in St. Catharines, Ontario and became a businessman and manufacturer by career. The son of James Dew Chaplin and Edna Elizabeth Burgess, he was educated in St. Catharines and established himself in business in Galt. Chaplin was president of Canadian General Tower Limited and a director of the Waterloo Savings and Trust Company. In 1920, he married Helen Elizabeth Goring. Chaplin represented Waterloo South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1945 to 1948; he was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1948. He was first elected to the House of Commons for the Waterloo South riding in the 1962 general election and re-elected there in 1963. James Dew Chaplin, (March 20, 1863 – August 23, 1937) was a Canadian politician. Born in Toronto, Canada West, the son of William Lamont Chaplin and Harriet Dew, Chaplin was educated at the Public Schools and St. Catharines Collegiate Institute. A manufacturer in St. Catharines, Ontario, he was president of the Chaplin Wheel Company, Canada Axe and Harvest Tool Company, and the Wallingford Manufacturing Company. Chaplin served four years as a member of St. Catharines city council. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of Lincoln in the 1917 federal election. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1921, 1925, 1926, and 1930. In 1926, he was the Minister of Trade and Commerce in the short lived cabinet of Arthur Meighen. In 1888, Chaplin married Edna Elizabeth Burgess. He died in St. Catharines at the age of 74. 1925 Canadian Federal Election
The 1925 Canadian federal election was held on October 29, 1925 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 15th Parliament of Canada. The Conservative party took the most seats in the House of Commons, although not a majority. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party was invited to form a minority government. Unlike the Conservative party, King's Liberals had the conditional support of the many Farmer/Progressive MPs. The government fell the following year. Governor General Baron Byng of Vimy offered the Conservatives under Meighen a chance to form government. This too fell in short order. Byng's action precipitated the " King–Byng Affair", which became the main issue of the 1926 election.
