Alexander Barannikov
Alexander Ivanovich Barannikov ( Russian: Александр Иванович Баранников; 1858 – 18 August 1883) was a Russian revolutionary and terrorist who was one of the leaders of the military wing of the Narodnaya Volya (People's Will), the organisation that assassinated the Tsar Alexander II. Biography Born into the Russian nobility, Barannikov was educated at a military gymnasium (secondary school) in Orlov, and at the First Pavlovsk Military School in St Petersburg. In 1876, he faked suicide, leaving a note for the principal, to join the revolutionary movement, as a propagandist in the Rostov-on-Don area. In 1877, he joined the Zemlya i volya ("Land and Freedom") party. He settled in the Nizhny Novgorod region, trying to recruit local farmers. Returning to St Petersburg, he was one of the first to advocate that the revolutionaries should use terrorist tactics. Sergey Mikhaylovich Stepnyak-Kravchinsky (russian: Серге́й Миха́йлович Степня́к-Кравчи́нский; July 1, 1851 – 23 December 1895), known in the 19th century London revolutionary circles as Sergius Stepniak, was a Russian revolutionary mainly known for assassinating General Nikolai Mezentsov, the chief of Russia's Gendarme corps and the head of the country's secret police, with a dagger in the streets of St Petersburg in 1878. Praskovya Ivanovskaya (russian: Прасковья Семёновна Ивановская; 3 November 1852 – 19 September 1935) was a revolutionary from the Russian Empire, was a member of both the Narodnaya Volya (People's Will) and Socialist-Revolutionary Party. Early life Praskovya was born in Sokovnino, Tula Governorate on 3 November 1852. She was the daughter of a priest, and her mother died when she was young, leaving her to be educated at the local boarding school. Ivanovskaya's older brother, Vasily Ivanovsky, was a medical student who had become a follower of Sergey Nechayev. It was through her brother that Praskovya became interested in revolutionary activity, and was able to acquire radical literature which she distributed at her school. The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706 to 1740 as a star fortress. The Trial of the 20 was the largest trial ever held of members of Narodnaya Volya (“The People's Will”), the organisation that assassinated the Tsar Alexander II. It is referred to as the Mikhailov Trial, after the lead defendant, Alexander Mikhailov. In contrast to the earlier Trial of the 193, or the Moscow trials held in the 1930s, there is no dispute about whether the 20 were guilty. All of them admitted their roles in carrying out or abetting terrorist acts, and with one exception, argued that they were justified.
