Alex Esclamado
Alex Esclamado (April 2, 1929 – November 11, 2012) was a Filipino-born American newspaper publisher, lawyer and journalist. In 1961, Esclamado founded the '' Philippine News'' out of his home in the Sunset District of San Francisco, California. Esclamado became a vocal opponent of former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos after his government declared martial law in 1972. Awards and recognition In October 1986, Esclamado was recognized as the only Filipino-American recipient of the congressionally sponsored Ellis Island Medal of Honor award. On May 9, 1989, President Cory Aquino conferred the Philippine Legion of Honor on Esclamado. Later life and death Esclamado returned to the Philippines in August 2011. The Philippine Legion of Honor ( fil, Lehiyong Pandangal ng Pilipinas; es, Legion de Honor Filipino) was established by President Manuel Roxas, through Philippine Army Circular No. 60 dated July 3, 1947. The Philippine Legion of Honor was patterned after the Legion of Merit of the United States of America, and was meant to honor both civilians and members of the military, Filipino or foreign. Originally, like the U.S. Legion of Merit, the Philippine Legion of Honor had four classes, known as degrees, with Legionnaire being the basic rank, and Chief Commander being the highest. With the reform of the Philippine system of orders and decorations in 2003, the Philippine Legion of Honor's classes were renamed "ranks" instead of "degrees", and the ranks expanded. Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte
Padre Burgos, officially the Municipality of Padre Burgos ( ceb, Lungsod sa Padre Burgos; tl, Bayan ng Padre Burgos), is a 5th class municipality of the Philippines, municipality in the Philippine Province, province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 11,159 people. Padre Burgos is named after Fr. José Burgos, one of the martyred priests collectively called Gomburza. The town is being surrounded by Sogod Bay in the East, Padre Burgos was once called "Tamulayag", a vernacular slang which means "Let's go fishing". Fishing is the main livelihood in the town.
