Alejandro Hales
Alejandro Hales Jamarne (April 23, 1923 – April 7, 2001) was a Chilean lawyer, diplomat and politician. He was a member of the Agrarian Labor Party. He served as the Minister of Agriculture from April 1953 to June 1954. He served as the Chilean Ambassador to Bolivia from 1954 to 1958. He also served as the Minister of Mining from September 1992 to March 1994. Patricio Aylwin Azócar (; 26 November 1918 – 19 April 2016) was a Chilean politician from the Christian Democratic Party, lawyer, author, professor and former senator. He was the first president of Chile after dictator Augusto Pinochet, and his election marked the Chilean transition to democracy in 1990. Despite resistance from elements of the Chilean military and government after his election, Aylwin was staunch in his support for the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation which exposed the systematic brutalities of the dictatorship. Early life Aylwin, the eldest of the five children of Miguel Aylwin and Laura Azócar, was born in Viña del Mar. There have been three Christian Democrat presidents in the past, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, Patricio Aylwin, and Eduardo Frei Montalva. Customarily, the PDC backs specific initiatives in an effort to bridge socialism and laissez-faire capitalism. This economic system has been called "social capitalism" and is heavily influenced by Catholic social teaching or, more generally, Christian ethics.
