Alec Monk
David Alec George Monk (born 13 December 1942), known as Alec Monk, is a British businessman who is a former chairman and chief executive of the supermarket chain Gateway and former chairman of the brewing company Charles Wells Ltd. Life Monk was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, from 1962 to 1965, obtaining a degree in PPE. He was then part of the research staff on corporate finance and taxation at Sheffield University and the London Business School before working for Rio Tinto Zinc, becoming a director in 1974. After being vice-president and director of AEA Investors from 1977, he became chairman and chief executive of Gateway in 1981, remaining in post until 1989. He was a member of the now-defunct National Economic Development Council from 1986 to 1990, and was president of the Institute of Grocery Distribution from 1987 to 1989. Somerfield
Somerfield (; originally Gateway) was a chain of small to medium-sized supermarkets operating in the United Kingdom. The company also previously owned the Kwik Save chain of discount food stores. The company was taken over by the Co-operative Group on 2 March 2009 in a £1.57 billion deal, creating the UK's fifth-largest food retailer. The Somerfield name was replaced by the Co-operative brand in a rolling programme of store conversions ending in summer 2011. St Hugh's College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. It is located on a site on St Margaret's Road, to the north of the city centre. Wells & Co. (formerly Charles Wells Ltd) is the holding company of the Charles Wells Brewery and Pub Company (a pub chain). Charles Wells Ltd was founded in 1876 by Charles Wells in Bedford, England.
