Alco School
The Alco School is a former educational facility located just north of Arkansas Highway 66 in rural western Stone County, Arkansas, not far from the hamlet of Alco. It is a single-story stone structure, with a hip roof that has two eyebrow dormers. The main entry is on the western facade, sheltered by a parapeted porch. The interior originally had two classrooms, and has been converted to residential use. The school was built in 1938 as a National Youth Administration works project. The school building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Arkansas Highway 66
Arkansas Highway 66 (AR 66 and Hwy. 66) is an east–west state highway in north central Arkansas. The route of runs from US Route 65 in Leslie east to AR 9 in Mountain View. Route description AR 66 begins in Leslie at US 65 near the American Legion Post No. 131 and runs past the Farmers Bank Building, the Dr. Clay House, and the Dr. Robinson House. The route winds east as a two–lane rural highway through Oxley to Highway 74. Stone County, Arkansas
Stone County is located in the Ozark Mountains in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The county is named for rugged, rocky area terrain of the Ozarks. Created as Arkansas's 74th county on April 21, 1873, Stone County has two incorporated cities: Mountain View, the county seat and most populous city, and Fifty-Six. The county is also the site of numerous unincorporated communities and ghost towns. Most of the county is sparsely populated forested Ozark hills; including the northern fifth of the county managed by the United States Forest Service as the Ozark National Forest. The remainder of the county is used for poultry, ranching, and timber production. The White River runs along the eastern boundary of Stone County. National Youth Administration
The National Youth Administration (NYA) was a New Deal agency sponsored by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his presidency. It focused on providing work and education for Americans between the ages of 16 and 25. It operated from June 26, 1935 to 1939 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and included a Division of Negro Affairs headed by Mary McLeod Bethune who worked at the agency from 1936 to 1943. Following the passage of the Reorganization Act of 1939, the NYA was transferred from the WPA to the Federal Security Agency. In 1942, the NYA was transferred to the War Manpower Commission (WMC). The NYA was discontinued in 1943. By 1938, college youth were paid from $30 to $40 a month for "work study" projects at their schools. Another 155,000 boys and girls from relief families were paid $10 to $25 a month for part-time work that included job training. Unlike the Civilian Conservation Corps, it included young women. Turkey Creek School
Turkey Creek School is a former school building located along Arkansas Highway 9 in Stone County, Arkansas. It is a single-story wood-frame structure, with a metal gable roof, weatherboard siding, and a stone foundation. The north facade has a symmetrical pair of entrances with simple trim, and the sides have five sash windows. Although it was built in 1925, the school resembles much older rural schoolhouses. It was used as a school until 1949, and now serves as a local community building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
