Alberto Delgado (jockey)
Alberto Delgado (born September 3, 1964) is an American National Champion jockey born in Santurce, Puerto Rico who has ridden predominantly in California and Maryland. He rode California Chrome in several of the horse's early races in the 2013 season. Both his father and younger brother Willie were jockeys. Willie, who also spent some time as a horse trainer on the east coast, came west in 2013 at his brother's urging and became California Chrome's regular exercise rider during the 2014 season even though the older Delgado was not kept on as the colt's jockey. In 1982, Alberto Delgado won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey on mounts that earned over $1.7 million at the track that year. As a promising young rider, he won the 1983 Grade III Barbara Fritchie Handicap on Stellarette, and the 1984 John B. Campbell Handicap on Island Champ. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. California Chrome
California Chrome (foaled February 18, 2011) is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and 2016 Dubai World Cup. He was the 2014 and 2016 American Horse of the Year. In 2016, he surpassed Curlin as the all-time leading North American horse in earnings won. Bred in California, the chestnut-colored horse was named for his flashy white markings, called "chrome" by horse aficionados. He was bred and originally owned by Perry Martin from Yuba City, California, and Steve Coburn of Topaz Lake, Nevada, who named their partnership DAP Racing, standing for "Dumb Ass Partners"—a tongue-in-cheek response to a passerby who questioned their wisdom in purchasing California Chrome's dam, Love the Chase. The Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey is an American thoroughbred horse racing honor. Created in 1971, it is part of the Eclipse Awards program honoring Champions in numerous horse racing categories. This article lists the annual winners of the Eclipse Award for a jockey undergoing their apprenticeship. The 1977 winner, Steve Cauthen, also won the overall Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey that same year. Maryland Million Turf is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in October since 1986 primarily at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland or at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. To be eligible for the Maryland Million Turf, a horse must be sired by a stallion who stands in Maryland. Due to that restriction the race is classified as a non-graded or "listed" stakes race and is not eligible for grading by the American Graded Stakes Committee. The race is part of Maryland Million Day, a 12-race program held in mid October that was the creation of renowned television sports journalist Jim McKay. The "Maryland Million" is the first State-Bred showcase event ever created. The Locust Grove Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, age three and older, over a distance of miles held annually in September during the early fall meeting at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Gallorette Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older over a distance of miles (8.5 furlongs) on the turf, run annually on Preakness Day at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The Martha Washington Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Oaklawn Park Race Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Federico Tesio Stakes
The Federico Tesio Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland over a distance of miles on the dirt for three-year-old horses. Run during the latter part of April/early May, the race can be a stepping stone to the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series, the Preakness Stakes. Local patrons refer to the Tesio Stakes as the "Preakness Trial." Since 2016, it has been a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Preakness. History The race was named in honor of famous Italian breeder Federico Tesio, owner of Dormello Stud in Dormelletto, Novara.
