Albert Woodland
Albert Woodland (10 June 1895 – 31 January 1955) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1920. Woodland was born in Conisbrough, Yorkshire. He joined Derbyshire in the 1920 season and began in a game for the county against Dublin University. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in a match against Warwickshire during May 1920, playing as the third bowler and a tailend batsman, but took no wickets. His second and final first-class fixture came against Essex when he bowled three overs and scored single figures in both innings. Woodland was a right-handed batsman with a top score of 19 not out, and a right-arm medium-fast bowler who bowled 15 overs without a wicket. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Derbyshire County Cricket Club
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010). Founded in 1870, the club held first-class status from its first match in 1871 until 1887. Conisbrough () is a town within the City of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England. It is roughly midway between Doncaster and Rotherham, and is built alongside the River Don at . It has a ward population (Conisbrough and Denaby) of 14,333. Etymology The name ''Conisbrough'' comes from the Old English (first recorded ) meaning "king's stronghold" or "king's fortified place". Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1920
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1920 was the English cricket club Derbyshire's fiftieth season. It was the club's twenty-second season in the County Championship and the most disastrous season ever experienced by any side since the County Championship was established. Derbyshire lost 17 of the 18 matches played and the other was abandoned without a ball being bowled. 1920 season John Chapman was captain for the season, having held the post twice before World War I. The team was very unstable. Thirty eight players played for Derbyshire in the season, but only six played in more than half the matches. The club suffered from the absence of devastating bowler Billy Bestwick for all but one match, in which he took seven wickets, while other players such as Thomas Forrester and Arnold Warren were drawing to the end of their career. Mansfield
Mansfield is a market town and the administrative centre of Mansfield District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area (followed by Sutton-in-Ashfield).
