Albert Ernest Day was a Welsh professional footballer. Day began his career with Cardiff City Cardiff City Football Club ( cy, Clwb Pêl-droed Dinas Caerdydd) is a professional association football club based in Cardiff, Wales. It competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Founded in 1899 as R ... but was unable to break into the first team. He joined Torquay United on loan during the 1938–39 season as a replacement for Roy Fursdon. Day made his league debut for Torquay on 24 December 1938 in a 4–1 defeat away to Northampton Town and was a regular until the end of the season. Day scored twice that season, the first securing a 1–1 draw with Aldershot on 14 January, the second was Torquay's second in a 5–3 win away to Reading on 11 March, Torquay's other goals coming from Ralph Allen, Frank Preskett and Andy Brown as well as an own goal from Reading's Jim Holmes. James Holmes (27 December 1908 – 1 November 1971) was an English footballer who played as a defender. Born in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, Holmes had trial spells with both Liverpool and Wigan Borough in 1925 but was an employed as a miner and playing for local side Prescot Cables when he was spotted by Chesterfield in 1930. Signed by Chesterfield in May of that year, Holmes remained with the Derbyshire club for just one season before being signed by Division One side Sheffield United in May 1931 for £1,750. Ralph Slack Littlewood Allen (30 June 1906 – 9 May 1981) was an English professional footballer. He played as a forward and he was born in Newburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland. Career Ralph Allen was playing for Dipton United when signed by Fulham in 1928. After 8 goals in 16 games for the Cottagers, he moved to Brentford in March 1931 for a fee of £275. He failed to make much of an impression on the first team during three seasons with the Bees, but did score heavily in the reserve team's London Combination title wins in 1931–32 and 1932–33, also captaining the team. He left the club to move to Charlton Athletic in October 1934 for £650. At Charlton he averaged almost a goal a game, scoring 47 goals in only 52 league appearances. He still holds the Charlton record for league goals in one season, a feat made more impressive by the fact that he didn't join them until October.
