Albert Collins (politician)
Albert Ernest Collins (11 March 1868 – 22 July 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born at Goulburn to broker Joseph Collins and Priscilla Israel. He attended Crown Street Public School but left at fourteen to be apprenticed to a chemist in Narrabri. He then worked in his brother's store, becoming a manager in 1886 and sole proprietor in 1898. From 1894 to 1901 he was an alderman at Narrabri, serving as mayor from 1898 to 1901. In 1901 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Narrabri. He transferred to Namoi as an Independent Liberal in 1904 and retired from politics in 1910. Goulburn ( ) is a regional city in the Southern Tablelands of the Australian state of New South Wales, approximately south-west of Sydney, and north-east of Canberra. It was proclaimed as Australia's first inland city through letters patent by Queen Victoria in 1863. Goulburn had a population of 23,835 at June 2018. Narrabri, New South Wales
Narrabri ( ) is a locality and seat of Narrabri Shire local government area in the North West Slopes, New South Wales, Australia on the Namoi River, northwest of Sydney. It sits on the junction of the Kamilaroi Highway and the Newell Highway. At the 2016 census, the town of Narrabri had a population of 5,903. Because of the geography of Narrabri and the surrounding areas, Narrabri township was quite prone to flooding and fire. Recently, changes have been made to the river flow to improve overall safety. It is the centre of a major cotton-growing industry. Other agricultural industries in the area include wheat, beef and lamb. Nearby attractions are Mount Kaputar National Park, the Australia Telescope Compact Array at the Paul Wild Observatory (administered by the CSIRO) and a number of agricultural centres. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Liberal Reform Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics between 1901 and 1916. It drew much of its support from Protestant and Temperance groups. History The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party, aligned with the federal Free Trade Party, and the Progressive Party, aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. The Progressive Party's vote collapsed at the 1904 election and many of its members then joined the Liberal Reform Party. Namoi, known as The Namoi until 1910 was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1880 and named after the Namoi River. It elected two members between 1891 and 1894. In 1894 it was abolished and partly replaced by Narrabri. In 1904, with the downsizing of the Legislative Assembly after Federation, Namoi was recreated, replacing Narrabri and part of Gunnedah. Hugh Murdoch Ross (8 July 1846 – 7 July 1912) was an Australian politician. He was born at Murrurundi to wheelwright John Ross and Mary Mackay. He was a farmer who also worked as a stock inspector, a postmaster and poundkeeper at Quirindi, and as clerk and secretary of the Carriers/Teamster Union at Narrabri. George Black (Australian Politician)
George Mure Black (15 February 1854 – 18 July 1936) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Edinburgh to messenger-at-arms George Stevenson Black and Isabella Muir. He was educated at Leith and attended the University of Edinburgh, studying arts and medicine but never graduating. He emigrated to Victoria in 1877, moving to New South Wales in 1878. From 1877 he lived with Georgina Duggan; they were never married but had twelve children. Black undertook a variety of jobs, eventually becoming a journalist with the ''Bulletin'' from 1889 to 1891 and editor of the ''Australian Workman'' from 1891 to 1892. In 1891 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for West Sydney, one of the first group of Labour MLAs.
