Narrabri was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was created in 1894, largely replacing Namoi and including Narrabri. It was abolished in 1904, following the 1903 New South Wales referendum A referendum concerning the reduction of the members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly was put to voters on 16 December 1903, in conjunction with the 1903 federal election. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Narrabri
Narrabri ( ) is a locality and seat of Narrabri Shire local government area in the North West Slopes, New South Wales, Australia on the Namoi River, northwest of Sydney. It sits on the junction of the Kamilaroi Highway and the Newell Highway. At the 2016 census, the town of Narrabri had a population of 5,903. Because of the geography of Narrabri and the surrounding areas, Narrabri township was quite prone to flooding and fire. Recently, changes have been made to the river flow to improve overall safety. It is the centre of a major cotton-growing industry. Other agricultural industries in the area include wheat, beef and lamb. A referendum concerning the reduction of the members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly was put to voters on 16 December 1903, in conjunction with the 1903 federal election. The referendum was conducted on the basis of optional preferential voting. However, preferences were not counted, as an overwhelming majority voted to reduce the number of members to 90. The question The text of the question was: As to what shall be the number of Members of the Legislative Assembly. Which of the following numbers do you prefer, and what is the order of your preference? Results The referendum was overwhelmingly in favour of reducing the number of members to 90. Aftermath The referendum did not provide how the reduction of members was to occur. Charles Collins (New South Wales Politician)
Charles Collins (12 May 185015 April 1898) was a merchant and politician in the Colony of New South Wales. He was born in Goulburn to Joseph Collins and Lydia Marks. He received a Jewish education locally, and was apprenticed to a merchant around 1865. In 1867 he became a clerk at Narrabri, eventually becoming store manager and then, from 1873, owner of his own store. He later expanded his business to include stores in Walgett, Pilliga and Wee Waa. He was also a Narrabri alderman and served as the town's first mayor. In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Namoi, but he retired after a single term. He returned to the Assembly in 1890 via a by-election, switching to the seat of Narrabri in 1894, which he held until his death. Hugh Murdoch Ross
Hugh Murdoch Ross (8 July 1846 – 7 July 1912) was an Australian politician. He was born at Murrurundi to wheelwright John Ross and Mary Mackay. He was a farmer who also worked as a stock inspector, a postmaster and poundkeeper at Quirindi, and as clerk and secretary of the Carriers/Teamster Union at Narrabri. On 20 April 1874 he married Caroline O'Neile, with whom he would have nine children. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1898 as the Labor member for Narrabri. Albert Ernest Collins
Albert Ernest Collins (11 March 1868 – 22 July 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born at Goulburn to broker Joseph Collins and Priscilla Israel. He attended Crown Street Public School but left at fourteen to be apprenticed to a chemist in Narrabri. He then worked in his brother's store, becoming a manager in 1886 and sole proprietor in 1898. From 1894 to 1901 he was an alderman at Narrabri, serving as mayor from 1898 to 1901. In 1901 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Narrabri. He transferred to Namoi as an Independent Liberal in 1904 and retired from politics in 1910. Collins died at Killara in 1956.
