Albany Herald
Albany Herald of Arms is a Scottish herald of arms of the Court of the Lord Lyon. The office was first mentioned in a diplomatic mission from Scotland to England in 1401. The office was probably instituted on the creation of Robert Stewart, son of King Robert II, as Duke of Albany, on 28 April 1398. Albany is an old name for the part of Scotland north of the River Forth, and is cognate with "Alba", the Scottish Gaelic for Scotland. The badge of office is ''A saltire Argent enfiled of a coronet of four fleurs-de-lys (one and two halves visible) Or ensigned of the Crown of Scotland Proper.'' Charles Ian Fraser
Charles Ian Fraser of Reelig (1903 – 1963) was a Scottish British Army officer, historian and officer of arms. Fraser was a commissioned officer in the Lovat Scouts. He served in the Second World War and in 1942 he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. In 1944 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness-shire. He was confirmed in the honorary rank of Major in 1951. He was later granted the honorary rank of Colonel. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1962 New Year Honours for his work as Chairman of the Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association of the County of Inverness. Francis Grant (officer Of Arms)
Sir Francis James Grant (1863–1953) was a Scottish officer of arms who eventually rose to the office of Lord Lyon King of Arms. Grant served in the Court of the Lord Lyon as Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary beginning on 17 May 1886. This appointment lasted until his promotion to the office of Rothesay Herald of Arms in Ordinary and Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records on 8 September 1898. On 10 May 1929, he was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms and Secretary of the Order of the Thistle. He was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1935. Grant retired from the office on 30 June 1945. He was the representative of Grant of Corrimony, and was the son of John Grant, Marchmont Herald of Arms in Ordinary from 1884 to 1888. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists in 1944. Thomas Innes Of Learney
Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (1893–1971) was a Scottish officer of arms who was Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969. He was Carrick Pursuivant and Albany Herald in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a very active Lord Lyon, strongly promoting his views of what his office was through his writings and pronouncements in his Court. In 1950, he convinced the Scots Law Times to start publishing the decisions made in Lyon Court. By ruling on uncontested petitions, he was able to expound many of his theories in court but not under review of his superior court, and get them published in the judicial record. His treatise, ''Scots Heraldry'', was first published in 1934 when he was Carrick Pursuivant; then a second, enlarged edition came out in 1956, and it has practically eclipsed earlier works on the subject. Sir Thomas Wolseley Haig KCIE CSI CMG CBE (7 August 1865 – 28 April 1938) was a civil servant in British India, then Professor at Trinity College, Dublin, and later a Scottish herald. Early life Haig was the son of Major Robert Wolseley Haig RA, FRS, (1830–72) the military astronomer, and Maria Georgina Brown. His maternal great grandfather was Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London. He was also descended from the Haigs of Bonnington, branch of the Border house of Haig of Bemersyde, and was thus related to the first Lord Haig. He was educated at Wellington College, and then Sandhurst. Army career Haig joined the Seaforth Highlanders in 1884 and was transferred to the Indian Army in 1887 where he served in Upper Burma (1887–89) fighting "dacoits" (bandits). George Swinton
Captain George Sitwell Campbell Swinton (10 May 1859 – 17 January 1937) was a long-serving Scottish politician and officer of arms. Life and work Swinton was born at 7 Darnaway Street on the Moray Estate in west Edinburgh, the second son of Archibald Campbell Swinton of Kimmerghame, Berwickshire, and Georgiana Caroline Sitwell, daughter of Sir George Sitwell, 2nd Baronet of Renishaw. In 1895 he married Elizabeth Ebsworth OBE, daughter of E.H. Ebsworth of Gattonside. The couple had one son and two daughters. Elizabeth was an accomplished singer and performed professionally later in life. He studied art under Professor Herkomer and other masters.
