The Papua New Guinea national rugby league team represents Papua New Guinea in the sport of rugby league football. In Papua New Guinea, Rugby League is a highly popular sport and is regarded as the country's national sport. The national side are known as the Kumuls ("birds-of-paradise" in Tok Pisin). History Rugby league in Papua New Guinea was first played in the late forties; it was introduced to the nation by Australian soldiers stationed there during and after the Second World War. Papua New Guinea were admitted to the game's International Federation in 1974. On 6 July 1975, at Lloyd Robson Oval, in Port Moresby the Kumuls played their first ever international. They were beaten 40-12 by England. The English team were en route to Australia and New Zealand to fulfil away fixtures during the 1975 World Cup. Paul Chue
Paul Chue (born 1947) is a former Papua New Guinean national representative rugby league player. Chue captained Papua New Guinea in their first ever test match against England in 1975. He is regarded as Kumul number one. Biography Chue was born in Papua New Guinea and took up rugby union in his school years at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill in Sydney. He was the first boy of Asian heritage to make that school's rugby first XV when selected in 1963. Jeremiah Simbiken (born 17 August 2000) is an Australia-based Papua New Guinean professional rugby league footballer who plays as a for the Dolphins in the National Rugby League (NRL) and Papua New Guinea at international level. Background Simbiken was born in Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. Playing career International career (2022) In 2022, Simbiken was named in the Papua New Guinea squad for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England, and made his international début for PNG against Wales in October 2022.
