The Shadows
The Shadows (originally known as the Drifters) were an English instrumental rock group, who dominated the British popular music charts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, in the pre- Beatles era. They served as the backing band for Cliff Richard from 1958 to 1968, and have joined him for several reunion tours. The Shadows have had 69 UK chart singles from the 1950s to the 2000s, 35 credited to the Shadows and 34 to Cliff Richard and the Shadows. The group, who were in the forefront of the UK beat-group boom, were the first backing band to emerge as stars. As pioneers of the four-member instrumental format, the band consisted of lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums. Their range covers pop, rock, surf rock and ballads with a jazz influence. David Alan Jones (born 26 October 1953) is a retired British diplomat who was High Commissioner to Sierra Leone during the British military intervention in the Sierra Leone Civil War. Career Jones joined the Lord Chancellor's Department in 1970 before transferring to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) the following year. His first overseas posting was to Tehran in 1975. After three years in Iran, he was posted to Islamabad, Pakistan, in 1978. After a further three years, he was seconded to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for two years. In 1986, he was promoted to First Secretary (Commercial) in Cairo, where he served until 1989. In 1993, he was promoted to consul and deputy head of mission in Luanda, Angola. Alan Wayne Jones (born 7 October 1945) is a researcher and scholarly writer on the subject of forensic toxicology and human physiology relating to alcohol consumption. Jones was born in Pontypridd, Wales, UK, but worked for most of his career in Sweden. Career Jones received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Wales (Cardiff) in 1974, and has been active in biological alcohol research as well as in forensic toxicology since that time. In 1993, he was awarded a senior doctorate degree (DSc) by the University of Wales for his body of published work dealing with forensic aspects of alcohol and other drugs of abuse. Jones recently retired from his position as senior scientist at the Division of Forensic Genetics and Forensic Chemistry at the Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine, which is located in the town of Linköping, Sweden. Alan William Jones (born 5 March 1940) is an Episcopal priest and Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. A prominent lecturer in Episcopalian and academic circles both nationally and internationally. He is a prolific writer of books, articles, and editorial opinions. Early life Born in London, England, Jones is the son of the late Edward Augustus and Blanche Hilda (Hunt) Jones. Alan Montgomery Jones Hon FRIAS Hon AIA (born September 1964) is a chartered architect and academic based in Northern Ireland, UK. He studied architecture at Queen's University Belfast, and after practising in London returned to Northern Ireland in 1998 to practise, and to teach at Queen's University Belfast. He jointly led architecture at Queen's (2008–16) and is currently professor of architecture (education and practice) in its School of Natural and Built Environment.
