Alan Byrne (Gaelic Footballer)
Alan Byrne is an Irish sportsperson who played Gaelic football for Wicklow Senior Football Championship team Annacurra and was a member of the Wicklow senior team from 2003 until 2015. Byrne predominantly played as a corner back for Wicklow but in many central positions from centre back to centre forward for his club. Playing career Byrne played at the intercounty level with both minor and under-21 county teams for several years. On the back of his performances, he was called into the Wicklow Junior team that won an All-Ireland Junior title in 2002 where he played in the cornerback position. The following year, he was a member of the senior side and made his championship debut as a sub vs Louth. He spent some time in the intercounty wilderness following the arrival of Hugh Kenny as manager. In 2007, Mick O'Dwyer arrived and Byrne was selected to play for O'Dwyer's senior squad. Wicklow
Wicklow ( ; ga, Cill Mhantáin , meaning 'church of the toothless one'; non, VÃkingaló) is the county town of County Wicklow in Ireland. It is located south of Dublin on the east coast of the island. Annacurra GAA
Annacurra or Annacurragh () is a small village in South-East County Wicklow, Ireland. It is located just off the R747 road which runs from Arklow to Baltinglass and is about 1.5 miles from Aughrim. The River Derry runs through the village. Sport The village's Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club, Annacurra GAA, had a number of successes in the early days of the GAA. The club won the first three Senior championships between 1887 and 1889 and went on to win the championship a total of nine times. More recently, the club are a senior team, having won promotion by winning the intermediate championship in 2010. Wicklow GAA
The Wicklow County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Cill Mhantáin) or Wicklow GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Wicklow. The county board is also responsible for the Wicklow county teams. The county football team plays in the Leinster Senior Football Championship. Wicklow has had very little success at senior level, being the only football team in the province and one of two in Ireland to have never won a senior title in either code, the other being Fermanagh. The county hurling team competes in the Christy Ring Cup, the third tier of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Hugh Kenny
Hugh Kenny is a former Irish Gaelic footballer from Baltinglass in County Wicklow. Kenny was part of the Baltinglass team that dominated Wicklow football in the 1980s and 1990s, winning an All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship Title in 1990. He also managed the Wicklow from 2003 to 2006 but resigned following heavy defeat to Carlow. He also played Full Back on the Wicklow team that beat Kerry in the 2002 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship. He was Kilmacud Crokes senior football manager from 2012 to 2013. Mick O'Dwyer
Michael O'Dwyer (born 9 June 1936) is an Irish retired Gaelic football manager and former player. He most famously managed the senior Kerry county team between 1974 and 1989, during which time he became the county's longest-serving manager and most successful in terms of major titles won. O'Dwyer is regarded as the greatest manager in the history of the game. He is one of only three men to manage five different counties (he was preceded in reaching this total by Mickey Moran in 2008 and emulated by John Maughan in 2018). Martin Breheny has described him as "the ultimate symbol of the outside manager". Blessington Gaelic Athletic Association is a Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Blessington, County Wicklow, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1909, initially playing its games in the Burgage near to the cemetery. The club crest depicts St. Mark's Cross, a high cross was moved to Burgage cemetery when its original home was flooded by the creation of Poulaphouca Reservoir. Blessington GAA won their first Wicklow Senior Football Championship in 1915.
