From this point, SR 171 travels in a northerly direction through rural portions of northern Tuscaloosa County en route to Fayette. In Fayette, SR 171 intersects SR 159 and US 43 near its central business district and both SR 129 and SR 102 on its north side. The route continues in its northerly track and intersects US 78 and I-22 en route to its northern terminus at SR 17 in Hamilton. Tupelo () is a city in and the county seat of Lee County, Mississippi, United States. With an estimated population of 38,300, Tupelo is the sixth-largest city in Mississippi and is considered a commercial, industrial, and cultural hub of North Mississippi. Tupelo was incorporated in 1866. The area had earlier been settled as "Gum Pond" along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. State Route 18 (SR 18) is a state highway in northwest Alabama. Route description SR 18 begins at the Mississippi state line near Vernon. In Vernon, it junctions with SR 17. It continues on its curvy route east, then southeast to the Fayette County line. It then junctions with SR 107. It turns south and junctions with SR 96 west. It then junctions with US 43 north and SR 171. It continues southeast with US 43 south. It makes an unusual curve south in Stough. It turns east again and junctions with SR 13.
