Al Karaana
Al Karaana ( ar, الكرعانة, Al Kir‘ānah) is a village in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. It used to be part of the Jariyan Al Batnah municipality before the municipality was incorporated into Al Rayyan. It is situated around to the south-west of the capital Doha. It is one of the three major landfill sites in the country, being used mainly for sewage wastes. Etymology Originating from the Arabic term "karaa", which can be translated as "rainwater" or "fresh water", Al Karaana was named after a local well which yielded water of exceptional quality. History In 1917, Al Karaana was described as a stopover on the route from Hofuf to Doha which contained a 150-feet deep masonry well yielding good water. Qatar
Qatar (, ; ar, قطر, Qaṭar ; local vernacular pronunciation: ), officially the State of Qatar,) is a country in Western Asia. Al Hemaila ( ar, الحميلة, Al Ḩumaylah) is a district in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. It is bordered by Bul Yuwabi to the south-east, the New Industrial Area to the east, Mebaireek to the north, Jery Al Tuweela to the west, and Al Udeid Air Base to the south-west. Al Kharrara
Al Kharrara ( ar, الخرارة; also spelled Al Harrarah) is a village in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Wakrah. The closest sizable city is Mesaieed, located to the east. It is a desert area, characterized by high aridity and the presence of grazing animals such as dromedary camels, goats and sheep. Etymology The village's name comes from the Arabic "khar", which roughly means "the sound of running water". As the area consists of varying elevations and several hills, the process of surface runoff is very noticeable during the wet months. Geography Al Kharrara is situated in south-central Qatar. Al Rekayya
Al Rekayya ( ar, الركية, Ar Rukayyah; also spelled Irkhaya) is an agricultural district in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. It is close to the border with Al Wakrah Municipality. Hassad Food owns a 162-hectare farm in Al Rekayya. As of 2012, the Qatari Arab Dairy Company (Ghadeer) owned and operated the largest farm in Qatar out of Al Rekayya. The farm spanned 1,200 hectares, had an inventory of roughly 2,400 cattle and primarily grew forage crops such as alfalfa and clover. Etymology The district's name translates to "well". Umm Bab
Umm Bab ( ar, أم باب) is a settlement in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al-Shahaniya. It used to be part of the Al Rayyan municipality and before that was administered by Al Jemailiya municipality before the latter was incorporated into Al Rayyan. Umm Bab is well known locally for Al Khraij Beach, which is also known as 'Palm Tree Beach' owing to a small cluster of palm trees situated off the shoreline. Aside from accommodating Qatar's first major non-oil related industry in the form of a cement processing facility which began operation in 1969, there also exists minor oil and gas separation facilities within the settlement. Qatari Municipal Elections, 2015
Municipal elections in Qatar were held for the fifth time on 13 May 2015. Five women contested the polls as candidates. Two women were elected to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) after winning their constituencies, heralding the first time two women have occupied seats in the council. This round of elections witnessed the merging of a number of depopulated constituencies and the addition of several new constituencies. Early indications suggested that the voter turnout would be low. However, the voter turnout in various constituencies ranged from 51% to 87%, with an overall voter turnout of 70%. This was a marked increase from the 43% voter turnout in the 2011 elections. The total number of voters was 21,735. There were 109 candidates. Central Municipal Council
The first municipal council in Qatar was formed in the early 1950s and it was reorganized in 1956. Doha Municipality, Doha municipality came into being in May 1963. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs was established in 1972 as a government body responsible for supervising the functions of municipalities. Decree No 4 for 1963 organized, for the first time, the election and appointment of the members of the municipal council. Law No 11 for 1963 followed. It stipulated that the municipal council is formed by a decree and that the appointment of the members is based on the nomination of the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture. The first joint meeting of municipal councils in the country was held in 1983.
