Al-Najaf FC
Al-Najaf Sports Club ( ar, نادي النجف الرياضي) is an Iraqi professional football club based in Najaf. They are members of the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Najaf has competed in the 2007 AFC Champions League. History In 1960, the city of Najaf began an active movement to establish a sports club after the athletes then felt the need of the city to a sports club that absorbed the energies of young people and their creations which are almost lost in the amateur leagues. Some of the dignitaries of the city were contacted for this purpose. The request was submitted to the Ministry of the Interior, which was responsible for the authorisation of sports clubs in Iraq at that time. The name of Al Ghiri Sports Club was proposed for this institution. Al-Najaf International Stadium
Al-Najaf International Stadium ( ar, ملعب النجف الدولي) is a newly built stadium in Najaf, Iraq, which was opened on 5 May 2018. It is used mostly for football matches and serves as the home stadium of Al-Najaf FC and Naft Al-Wasat SC. The stadium has a capacity of 30,000 spectators and the construction was at an overall cost of $83.75 million funded entirely by Iraqi government. Design The final design by Kansas City-based 360 Architecture has won the competition and was selected by Iraqi Ministry of Youth and Sports. The first proposed design was to include an athletics track but it was agreed to remove it in order to achieve a football specific stadium. The sports complex also contains two additional stadiums with 400 and 2000 spectators respectively, mainly used for training. Najeh Humoud
Najeh Humoud (Arabic: ناجح حمود حريب) is a former football coach of Najaf FC and Iraq. He played in midfield for Kufa FC in the 1970s, and the Najaf province team but never managed to play in the Iraqi first division. He began his coaching career with Najaf FC in 1987, and helped the club to their first ever cup in 1998 as his team beat Al-Shorta 4-0 at the Al Shaab Stadium to lift the Umm Al-Maarak Cup. He went on to manage the Iraqi youth team in 1998 and worked as Zoran Smileski's assistant at the 1998 Asian Youth Championship. Najeh then coached the Iraq national football team in 1999. The Seventh Mother of all Battles Championship ( ar, بطولة أم المعارك السابعة), commonly referred to as the 1997 Iraqi Elite Cup ( ar, كأس النخبة العراقي 1997), was the seventh occurrence of the Iraqi Elite Cup, organised by the Iraq Football Association. Iraqi Elite Cup
The Iraqi Elite Cup ( ar, كأس النخبة العراقي), known officially as the Baghdad Championship ( ar, بطولة بغداد) and previously known as the Mother of all Battles Championship ( ar, بطولة أم المعارك, ''Botola Umm Al-Ma'arik''), referring to the name that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein referred to the Gulf War as, was an annual football competition in men's domestic Iraqi football that was usually held at the beginning of each season. It was founded in 1991, and its last edition was the 2003 edition. The top eight teams of the previous Iraqi Premier League season entered the competition, with the exception of the 1991 and 1993 editions, where the top six teams of the league entered. 2005–06 Iraqi Premier League
The 2005–06 Iraqi Premier League kicked off on October 28, 2005. The 28 teams were split into four groups of seven. At the end of the group stage, the top three teams from each group (a total of 12 teams) advanced to the Elite Stage. In the Elite Stage, these 12 teams were split into four groups of three, with teams playing home and away against each team in their group respectively. The top team in each of the four groups moved on to the semi-finals, followed by a third place match and the final. Al-Zawraa won the league without losing a match. 1995–96 Iraqi Advanced League The 1995–96 Iraqi Advanced Clubs League was the 22nd season of the competition since its foundation in 1974. The name of the league was changed from ''Iraqi National Clubs First Division'' to ''Iraqi Advanced Clubs League''. The league title was won by Al-Zawraa for the third consecutive time. They also won the Iraq FA Cup for the fourth consecutive time, meaning they won three doubles in a row. Nadhim Shaker
Nadhim Shaker Salim ( ar, ناظم شاكر سالم; 18 December 1958 – 11 September 2020) was an Iraqi football player and coach of the Iraq national team. Playing career Nadhim Shaker was one of the most talented defenders in Iraqi football history. He began his playing career at Al-Amal in 1976 before moving to (Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya) the following year and played for the club until 1988, after which he became a player-manager for the Al-Salam club. He played for the Iraq national team from 1978 till 1986. The defender represented Iraq at the 1979 World Military Championship and at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico playing against Paraguay, Belgium and the hosts, Mexico.
