Akra Township is a township in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. Renwick Dam
Renwick Dam (National ID # ND00054) is a dam in Akra Township, Pembina County, North Dakota, USA, in the northeastern corner of the state. The earthen dam was completed in 1962 at a height of and a length of at its crest. It impounds the Tongue River for flood control and recreation. Both dam and reservoir are owned and operated by the Pembina County Water Resource District. The reservoir it creates, Lake Renwick, has a water surface of , a maximum capacity of 8400 acre-feet, and normal storage of 1226 acre-feet. Recreation includes fishing and visiting the adjacent Icelandic State Park, established to preserve evidence of the Icelandic heritage in North Dakota. Icelandic State Park
Icelandic State Park is a public recreation area on the north shore of Lake Renwick, west of Cavalier in Akra Township, Pembina County, North Dakota. The state park encompasses more than , two hundred of which are wooded. The park features a beach, museum, historic buildings, the Pioneer Heritage Center, and the Gunlogson State Nature Preserve. History The park was established in 1964 to preserve evidence of North Dakota's Icelandic heritage after G. B. Gunlogson (1887-1983) donated of his family's lands to the state in 1963. The land had been in the Gunlogson family for over 80 years when it was donated to North Dakota. Activities The park offers camping, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and boating. At the time of the 2000 Census, its population was 143, with an estimated 122 people as of 2009. History Advance Township was organized in 1888 from the northern part of Akra Township. A survey township, sometimes called a Congressional township or just township, as used by the United States Public Land Survey System, is a nominally-square area of land that is nominally six U.S. survey miles (about 9.66 km) on a side. Each 36-square-mile (about 93.2 km2) township is divided into 36 sections of one square mile (640 acres, roughly 2.6 km2) each. The sections can be further subdivided for sale. The townships are referenced by a numbering system that locates the township in relation to a principal meridian (north-south) and a base line (east-west).
