Advance Township (formerly Avon Township) is a township in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. At the time of the 2000 Census, its population was 143, with an estimated 122 people as of 2009. History Advance Township was organized in 1888 from the northern part of Akra Township. Akra Township was a "double township" at the time, covering two full survey townships. It was originally named Avon Township, but renamed Advance in 1905. Some early settlers in the township migrated here from the nearby Icelandic communities. The township population of 482 in 1900 was likely near the peak population. A survey township, sometimes called a Congressional township or just township, as used by the United States Public Land Survey System, is a nominally-square area of land that is nominally six U.S. survey miles (about 9.66 km) on a side. Cavalier is the largest city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Pembina County. The population was 1,246 at the 2020 census. Cavalier was founded in 1875 and became the county seat in 1911. Although they bear the same name, Cavalier is not located in nearby Cavalier County. The Tongue River flows past Cavalier and Cavalier Air Force Station is located near the city. History Cavalier was laid out in 1875 on open land. Backoo is an unincorporated community in Advance Township in North Dakota's Pembina County, United States, located approximately five miles northwest of Cavalier. It was established in 1887 as a townsite along the Great Northern Railroad. History Backoo was a town of roughly 50 people, and was one of the more prominent communities in the township. The post office was established September 26, 1887, and was in continuous operation for more than 100 years, closing October 11, 1988. The post office was assigned the ZIP code of 58215. Mail service is now handled through Cavalier. John Mountain, one of its first settlers, is reported to have named the town after the Barcoo River in his home country of Australia.
