Akella
Akella (russian: Акелла) was a Russian software company specializing in the development, publishing and distribution of video games and multimedia products. The founders of Akella met in 1993 and decided to start a company together, and in 1995 formed Akella. The company comprised five in-house development teams, a publishing house, a distribution center, a localization team and a quality assurance department; in total, 250 people were employed by Akella. There were several sub-brands owned by Akella, i.e. Macho Studios that developed erotic games and published Japanese hentai dating sims. The company is named after a Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book character, Akela the wolf, and its logo is a wolf. The game was initially developed as a sequel to '' Sea Dogs (Корсары)'', but was eventually changed to correspond to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It was still marketed as ''Корсары 2'' in Russia. The Xbox version was the first U.S. console game developed in Russia. An unrelated game by the same name was also released for mobile phones, as was a Game Boy Advance game. In it, the player is the captain of a ship and can serve as a privateer to a European power, or as a pirate. The game uses a custom 3D game engine and includes gameplay similar to ''Sid Meier's Pirates!'', while also being a true inter-character dialog-centered RPG. The game is often credited as one of the first successful Russian games, which had a notable influence on Russian game industry. It was followed by four sequels, one of which was tied in to Disney's '' Pirates of the Caribbean'' franchise. Running with Scissors (RWS) is an American video game developer based in Tucson, Arizona. It was founded in 1996 by Vince Desi through a business decision of Riedel Software Productions, a maker of child-friendly games. RWS created and maintains the '' Postal'' franchise, which has often caused controversy for its use of violence. RWS' first game was '' Postal'' in 1997, which caused much controversy and a trademark lawsuit from the United States Postal Service that lasted until 2003.
