Ajax 5–1 Liverpool was a association football, football match between AFC Ajax, Ajax and Liverpool F.C., Liverpool on 7 December 1966 at the Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam), Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was the first leg of a second round tie in the 1966–67 European Cup. The match was given the Dutch title "''De Mistwedstrijd''" (; "The Fog Match") as it was played in dense fog. Ajax were competing in the UEFA Champions League, European Cup for the third time, they had qualified as winners of the 1965–66 Eredivisie. Johan Cruyff
Hendrik Johannes Cruijff (, internationally known as Johan Cruyff; 25 April 1947 – 24 March 2016) was a Dutch professional football player and manager. Klaas Nuninga
Klaas Nuninga (born 7 November 1940) is a former Dutch international footballer who played for GVAV-Rapiditas, Ajax and DWS during his career. Club career Early career Nuninga began his career in the youth ranks of WVV 1896 in his home town of Winschoten. It was the same amateur club where Jan Mulder and Arie Haan began their careers. After a move to Be Quick 1887, he was recruited by GVAV-Rapiditas in 1961. GVAV-Rapidistas Starting his professional career in Groningen, with GVAV-Rapiditas, Nuninga played alongside Tonny van Leeuwen and Martin Koeman among others, to make up a pretty competitive side at the time. Anfield
Anfield is a football stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, which has a seating capacity of 53,394, making it the seventh largest football stadium in England. It has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since their formation in 1892. Jesaia Swart (born 3 July 1938), commonly known as Sjaak Swart, is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a winger for Ajax. During his career at Ajax, he amassed a total of almost 600 matches, a record for the club. Biography Swart is Jewish and was born in Muiderberg, a fishing village about 20 kilometers east of Amsterdam. His Jewish fisherman father sold herring at the market. As a child, he and his father concealed themselves as non-Jews during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945, hiding from Germans and Dutch colluders, who rounded up any Jews; nearly 75 per cent of the Dutch Jewish population was killed in those years. Bennie Muller
Bennie Muller (born 14 August 1938) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a midfielder for Ajax and the Netherlands national team. Early life Muller was born in the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam-East. His grandfather was a fruit seller named Levi Sluiter. His mother was incarcerated in Westerbork transit camp during World War 2. Approximately 200 members of Muller's extended family were killed in the Holocaust. Career Muller played club football for Ajax beginning in 1958, and was its captain. He also appeared for the Netherlands national team on 43 occasions, and was its captain. Petrus Johannes "Piet" Keizer (14 June 1943 – 10 February 2017) was a Dutch professional footballer who played as a left winger. As part of the " Total Football" Ajax Amsterdam team of the 1960s and 1970s, Keizer was particularly notable during the successive managerial tenures of Rinus Michels and Stefan Kovacs (1965–1973). 1969 European Cup Final
The 1969 European Cup Final was a football match held at the Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, on 28 May 1969, that saw Milan of Italy play against Ajax of the Netherlands to determine who would be the champions of Europe that season. Ajax made history by becoming the first Dutch side to reach the final, but they were beaten by their Italian opponents 4–1. As of 2022, Pierino Prati remains the most recent player to score a hat-trick in a European Cup or Champions League final. Route to the final Milan had a bye in the second round due to the withdrawal of a number of Eastern European clubs from the competition. In the quarter-finals, eventual finalists Ajax were deadlocked 4–4 on aggregate against Portuguese side Benfica after two legs, forcing a replay.
