Airbus Commercial Aircraft, formally Airbus S.A.S., is one of the three divisions of the European aerospace corporation Airbus SE and the most prominent of them. A wholly owned division of the Airbus SE, the company designs, develops and manufactures more than half of the world's commercial aircraft and is Boeing's main competitor. Airbus S.A.S. is based in Blagnac (a suburb of Toulouse, France), with production and manufacturing facilities mostly in the European Union (notably in France, Germany and Spain) as well as the United Kingdom, China, the United States and Canada. A wide-body aircraft, also known as a twin-aisle aircraft, is an airliner with a fuselage wide enough to accommodate two passenger aisles with seven or more seats abreast. The Boeing 737 is a narrow-body aircraft produced by Boeing at its Renton Factory in Washington. Developed to supplement the Boeing 727 on short and thin routes, the twinjet retains the 707 fuselage width and six abreast seating with two underwing turbofans. The Airbus A310 is a wide-body aircraft, designed and manufactured by Airbus Industrie, then a consortium of European aerospace manufacturers. Airbus had identified a demand for an aircraft smaller than the A300, the first twin-jet wide-body. A twinjet is able to fly well enough to land with a single working engine, making it safer than a single-engine aircraft in the event of failure of an engine.
