Aguçadoura
Aguçadoura is a Portuguese ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") and former civil parish located in Póvoa de Varzim. In the census of 2001, it had a population of 4,530 inhabitants and a total area of 3.47 km2. A 2013 law amalgamated it into the new União das Freguesias de Aguçadoura e Navais. The name of Aguçadoura derives from "''petra aguzadoira''" (sharp stone or stone to sharp farming tools). History Aguçadoura is the newest parish of Póvoa de Varzim; it was created on October 14 of 1933, when it separated from the parish of Navais, to which it always belonged. The first reference to the place appears in 1258: ''in Petra Aguzadoira que est in termino de Nabaes''. The inhabitants had a difficult time settling in the area, and it was only constituted by sand dunes that were constantly blown by the wind. Póvoa De Varzim
Póvoa de Varzim (, ) is a Portugal, Portuguese city in Norte Region, Portugal, Northern Portugal and sub-region of Greater Porto, from its city centre. It sits in a sandy coastal plain, a cuspate foreland, halfway between the Minho River, Minho and Douro rivers. In 2001, there were 63,470 inhabitants, with 42,396 living in the city proper. The city expanded southwards, to Vila do Conde, and there are about 100,000 inhabitants in the urban area alone. Estela is one of the seven civil parishes of Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 2,307,Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) Census 2011 results according to the 2013 administrative division of Portugal in an area of 11.54 km². Masseira
Masseira is a unique form of traditional farming practised in Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende in Portugal. The masseira technique increases agricultural yields by using large, rectangular depressions dug into the sand dunes of the region, with the sand piled up into banks on the sides of the depression. The term ''masseira'', from the Portuguese for "kneading trough", refers to their characteristic shape. This practice has fallen into disuse.Póvoa de Varzim, Um Pé na Terra, Outro no Mar. The masseira technique relies upon a rectangular depression surrounded on four sides by sloping banks, known as the ''quatro valos'' ("four walls").
