Agustín Ross Park
Agustín Ross Park ( es, Parque Agustín Ross) is a park located in the Agustín Ross Avenue, in front of the old Ross Casino, in Pichilemu. It is a National Monument of Chile. The original park contains 100-year-old native Canary Island Date palms (''Phoenix canariensis ''Phoenix canariensis'', the Canary Island date palm or pineapple palm, is a species of flowering plant in the palm family Arecaceae, native to the Canary Islands off the coast of Morocco. It is a relative of ''Phoenix dactylifera'', the true dat ...'') and many green spaces. Both the park and the former casino were named National Monuments on February 25, 1988, and the majority of the houses situated in the park are private homes. It has become an attractive walking destination, following its restoration. Pichilemu
Pichilemu (, ), originally known as Pichilemo, is a beach resort city and commune in central Chile, and capital of Cardenal Caro Province in the O'Higgins Region. The commune comprises an urban centre and twenty-two villages, including Ciruelos, Cáhuil, and Cardonal de Panilonco. It is located southwest of Santiago. Pichilemu had over 13,000 residents as of 2012. The Pichilemu area was long populated by the indigenous Promaucaes. European-Chilean development began in the mid-sixteenth century, as ''conquistador'' Pedro de Valdivia gave Juan Gómez de Almagro the Topocalma encomienda (which included the current territory of Pichilemu) in January 1541. Agustín Ross Hotel
The Hotel Ross is an old hotel in the Chilean city of Pichilemu. It was created by Agustín Ross Edwards in 1885, and remodeled in December 1987. The park is located on Agustín Ross Avenue, in front of the old Ross Casino. The hotel was originally named ''Great Hotel Pichilemu'' ( es, Gran Hotel Pichilemu). The once grand Ross Hotel was constructed at the same time. Although the hotel, one of the oldest in Chile, is still partially open to guests, it is in a high state of disrepair. Agustín Ross
Agustín Ross Edwards (February 5, 1844 – October 20, 1926) was a Chilean politician, diplomat, and banker. He was son of David Ross and Carmen Edwards Ossandon; both were of British ancestry. He was married to Susana De Ferari. Biography Ross studied at the Carlos Black and Simon Kerr School in La Serena. He studied at the Queen Street Institution in Scotland between 1856 and 1860. He participated in the trades of the bank of the Edwards family. He was private agent in London of the Government Junta of Iquique in 1891. He was plenipotentiary minister in Great Britain in February 1892. Ross moved to Pichilemu around 1890 and bought some land in the town. In San Fernando, in September 1885, he bought some property from Francisco Torrealba, on a site that was located at the Pichilemu beach. The Pichilemu City Council ( es, Concejo Municipal de Pichilemu) is the legislative body of the City of Pichilemu. The council meets in Pichilemu City Hall. 2010 Pichilemu Earthquake
The 2010 Pichilemu earthquakes ( es, link=no, Terremoto de Pichilemu de 2010), also known as the Libertador O'Higgins earthquakes, were a pair of intraplate earthquakes measuring 6.9 and 7.0 that struck Chile's O'Higgins Region on 11 March 2010 about 16 minutes apart. The earthquakes were centred northwest of the city of Pichilemu. The earthquakes were caused by increased regional stress arising from an earthquake on 27 February, centered offshore Maule Region, which was felt throughout central Chile. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center pointed out the possibility of local tsunamis within of the epicentre, although small, but violent waves were seen in the Pichilemu and Bucalemu area. One person was reported dead. At least eleven aftershocks immediately followed, causing panic throughout coastal towns between the Coquimbo and Los Lagos regions.
