Butterflies Of Asia
Butterflies are insects in the macrolepidopteran clade Rhopalocera from the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly coloured wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight. The group comprises the large superfamily Papilionoidea, which contains at least one former group, the skippers (formerly the superfamily "Hesperioidea"), and the most recent analyses suggest it also contains the moth-butterflies (formerly the superfamily "Hedyloidea"). Butterfly fossils date to the Paleocene, about 56 million years ago. Butterflies have a four-stage life cycle, as like most insects they undergo complete metamorphosis. Winged adults lay eggs on the food plant on which their larvae, known as caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, sometimes very rapidly, and when fully developed, pupate in a chrysalis. When metamorphosis is complete, the pupal skin splits, the adult insect climbs out, and after its wings have expanded and dried, it fli ... Taxonomy As a result of studies of molecular phylogenetics, ''Agriades'' has been enlarged to include some of the species that used to be placed in ''Albulina'' (see the ''orbitulus'' species-group below) and in ''Vacciniina'' (see the ''optilete'' species-group). In some earlier classifications, these three genera used to be included in ''Plebejus''. Species Listed alphabetically within groups: The ''aquilo'' species-group: * '' Agriades diodorus'' (Bremer, 1861) Mongolia, North China, South Siberia * ''Agriades glandon'' (de Prunner, 1798) – Glandon blue or Arctic blue (including ''Agriades aquilo'', '' Agriades cassiope'', and '' Agriades franklinii'') * '' Agriades podarce'' (C. & R. Felder, 865 The ''ellisi'' species-group: * '' Agriades ellisi'' (Marshall, 1882) Himalaya * '' Agriades errans'' (Riley, 1927) Himalaya * '' Agriades jaloka' ... The highest peak in the Tian Shan is Jengish Chokusu, at high. Its lowest point is the Turpan Depression, which is below sea level. One of the earliest historical references to these mountains may be related to the Xiongnu word ''Qilian'' ( zh, s=祁连, t=祁連, first=t, p=Qílián) – according to Tang commentator Yan Shigu, ''Qilian'' is the Xiongnu word for sky or heaven. Sima Qian in the ''Records of the Grand Historian'' mentioned ''Qilian'' in relation to the homeland of the Yuezhi and the term is believed to refer to the Tian Shan rather than the Qilia ... Darvaz (region)
Darvaz ( fa, درواز, Romanized: ''Darvāz'' ), alternatively Darwaz, Darvoz, or Darwoz, was an independent Pamiri principality until 1878, ruled by a Mir and its capital was at Qal'ai Khumb. The principality controlled territory on the left and right banks of the Oxus River. The major towns were Qal'ai Khumb and Kham. History Traditionally it was able to maintain its independence against its more powerful neighbors. At the beginning of the 16th century, the region was caught up in the conflict between the Timurids and the Uzbeks. Despite the Uzbek conquest of Badakhshan, it seems the northern part of Darvaz was able to maintain independence. During the 17th century, the ruler of Darvaz was Shah Qirghiz. Information regarding the length of his reign was disputed. Barthold writes that in 1638 the Uzbeks conquered Darvaz and executed the ruler, his brother Shah Gharib. In his stead, Shah Qirghiz became an independent ruler and reigned from 1638 to 1668. However, other sourc ... Palearctic
The Palearctic or Palaearctic is the largest of the eight biogeographic realms of the Earth. It stretches across all of Eurasia north of the foothills of the Himalayas, and North Africa. The realm consists of several bioregions: the Euro-Siberian region; the Mediterranean Basin; the Sahara and Arabian Deserts; and Western, Central and East Asia. The Palaearctic realm also has numerous rivers and lakes, forming several freshwater ecoregions. The term 'Palearctic' was first used in the 19th century, and is still in use as the basis for zoogeographic classification. History In an 1858 paper for the ''Proceedings of the Linnean Society'', British zoologist Philip Sclater first identified six terrestrial zoogeographic realms of the world: Palaearctic, Aethiopian/Afrotropic, Indian/Indomalayan, Australasian, Nearctic, and Neotropical. The six indicated general groupings of fauna, based on shared biogeography and large-scale geographic barriers to migration. Alfred Wallace a ...
